Disaster training in Teliamura raises alarm after rescue boat fails during drill, reviving memories of a tragic accident and exposing concerns over disaster preparedness, equipment maintenance, and administrative accountability in Tripura’s emergency management system.
Concerns over disaster preparedness have resurfaced in the Teliamura subdivision of Teliamura after rescue equipment reportedly malfunctioned during a disaster management training programme conducted by the local administration. The incident occurred near the Chakmaghat boat ghat area and has triggered criticism from residents who fear that inadequate preparedness could prove disastrous during real emergencies.
The training programme was organized by the subdivision administration of Teliamura to educate and train young volunteers on emergency rescue techniques. The initiative was intended to strengthen community participation in disaster response, particularly in a region that frequently faces floods and other natural calamities.
Officials began the training with a theoretical session explaining the fundamentals of disaster response. Participants were briefed on rescue procedures, safety measures, and the role of volunteers during flood situations. The objective was to prepare the trainees to assist authorities in emergency operations and ensure quicker response during disasters.
However, the programme encountered unexpected difficulties when the training moved to the practical demonstration stage. A boat brought for the hands-on training session reportedly failed to start despite repeated attempts by officials and technical staff. The malfunction left organizers unable to demonstrate critical rescue procedures involving boat operations.
As a result, the practical training segment was abruptly halted, leaving participants disappointed and raising doubts about the reliability of the equipment being used for emergency preparedness programmes.
The incident has also revived painful memories of a tragic accident that took place last year on a national highway near Teliamura. In that incident, a driver named Mihir Debnath suffered critical injuries after being crushed by a vehicle during a severe road accident.
Eyewitnesses at the time had reported that the injured man remained conscious and was speaking while rescue efforts continued at the site. However, due to alleged failures in disaster management equipment and lack of proper coordination among authorities, rescue operations were delayed. Despite prolonged efforts by bystanders and officials, he could not be freed in time and eventually died at the accident spot.
The tragic incident had sparked widespread public outrage. Following the accident, then Sub-Divisional Magistrate Parimal Majumdar was suspended over alleged administrative lapses. A show-cause notice was also reportedly issued to the District Magistrate, though the final outcome of the inquiry was never publicly disclosed.
Local residents say that before the memory of that tragedy could fade, the recent malfunction during the disaster training programme has once again highlighted serious shortcomings in emergency preparedness.
Many residents have questioned how authorities can effectively respond to disasters if essential rescue equipment fails even during routine training exercises. They argue that proper maintenance and regular testing of equipment are critical to ensuring that emergency response teams can act quickly when lives are at stake.
A section of the community also pointed out that special disaster response teams exist precisely to avoid such situations, yet operational failures continue to surface. According to them, the latest incident reflects systemic issues in coordination, preparedness, and accountability.
Community members have urged the administration to conduct a comprehensive review of its disaster management infrastructure and ensure that all equipment is functional before organizing training programmes or emergency drills.
Experts also stress that disaster preparedness depends not only on trained personnel but also on reliable equipment and efficient coordination among various departments.

As the debate intensifies in Teliamura, residents are demanding greater transparency and stronger accountability from authorities responsible for disaster management. The recent equipment failure has once again raised a crucial question: whether the region is truly prepared to handle emergencies when they strike.
