Tripura Assembly budget session begins March 13 with Governor Indrasena Reddy’s address. Election of a new Speaker likely after Biswa Bandhu Sen’s demise, while Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy to present 2026–27 Budget amid TTAADC poll expectations.
The budget session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly will commence on March 13, marking a crucial phase in the state’s political and administrative calendar. The session is expected to witness significant developments, including the possible election of a new Speaker and the presentation of the Budget for the 2026–27 financial year.
Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu will address the House on the opening day, formally inaugurating the ninth session of the 13th Tripura Assembly. The Governor’s address traditionally outlines the government’s policy priorities and key achievements while setting the tone for legislative discussions in the days ahead.
The detailed schedule and agenda of the session will be finalized at a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee on March 6. This meeting will determine the duration of the session, the allocation of time for debates, and the order of business, including the Budget presentation and other legislative matters.
One of the most anticipated developments during the session is the likely election of a new Speaker. The post has remained vacant since the demise of sitting Speaker Biswa Bandhu Sen on December 26 last year. While political discussions have intensified, the formal process for electing a new Speaker has not yet begun, and no official notification has been issued so far.
Political observers indicate that several MLAs from the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party are in contention for the Speaker’s position. However, the party has not officially announced its nominee. The election of the Speaker will be a key highlight, as the office plays a crucial constitutional role in maintaining order, ensuring impartiality, and facilitating legislative proceedings.
Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy is set to present the Budget for the 2026–27 financial year during the session. Although the Budget is usually presented on the opening day, the final decision regarding the exact date will be taken at the Business Advisory Committee meeting. This will be the third Budget of the BJP-led government’s second term in Tripura.
The upcoming Budget assumes added importance amid expectations of increased financial allocations to the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council. The 28-member tribal autonomous body is likely to face crucial elections in March or April, and higher budgetary support could become a focal point in political discourse.
The TTAADC plays a vital role in administering tribal-majority areas of the state, and enhanced funding could signal the government’s intent to strengthen grassroots governance and development initiatives. Political analysts believe that budgetary provisions for tribal welfare, infrastructure, and rural development will be closely scrutinized by both the opposition and regional stakeholders.
