Agartala Mayor Dipak Majumder confirms AMC eviction drive will continue across the city to remove encroachments, relocate roadside vendors, reduce traffic congestion, and develop new parking and commercial infrastructure near Jackson Gate.

The eviction and encroachment removal drive across the city will continue throughout the year, Mayor Dipak Majumder announced on Saturday, reaffirming the commitment of the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) to ease traffic congestion and streamline urban mobility.

Addressing reporters, the mayor said the civic body has intensified its campaign against unauthorised roadside encroachments that have long contributed to severe traffic snarls in key areas of the capital city. He emphasized that the ongoing action is not merely an eviction exercise but part of a broader urban development strategy aimed at ensuring smoother traffic flow and organized public spaces.

“We have decided to establish a parking lot and permanently relocate the vendors,” Majumder stated, underlining that the AMC is working simultaneously on rehabilitation and infrastructure development.

Parking Facility and Vendor Rehabilitation Plan

As part of the comprehensive plan, the AMC has proposed the construction of a 1,200 square foot shopping complex and the development of a park near Jackson Gate. The project aims to create designated vending spaces for displaced roadside sellers while also improving the aesthetic and functional value of the locality.

According to the mayor, notices have already been served to vendors operating in areas identified as major traffic bottlenecks. He clarified that the civic administration is prioritizing voluntary relocation and is offering alternative vending spaces to those willing to cooperate.

“We have served notices to vendors wherever traffic congestion is caused. The vendors who are voluntarily shifting as per our requests, we are arranging alternative vending spaces for them,” he said.

The mayor further explained that the AMC’s objective is not to deprive vendors of their livelihood but to regulate urban space in a way that benefits the broader public. Officials are coordinating with affected vendors to ensure a smoother transition to the proposed shopping complex and designated vending zones.

Resistance and Legal Backing

However, the drive has not been without resistance. In certain pockets of the city, civic authorities have encountered opposition while attempting to clear unauthorised structures. Majumder said that in such cases, the administration is acting strictly in accordance with the law.

“In places where we are confronting resistance, force is being used to clear the unauthorised structures,” he said, adding that the enforcement measures are being carried out within the legal framework.

The mayor also revealed that several vendors had approached the court challenging the eviction drive. According to him, the court has ruled in favor of the AMC’s actions, thereby providing legal validation to the ongoing campaign.

Year-Round Encroachment Clearance

Majumder reiterated that the overarching goal of the eviction drive is to ensure a congestion-free city and improve daily commuting conditions for residents. Traffic congestion has been a persistent issue in several commercial and densely populated areas, often leading to delays, accidents, and inconvenience for pedestrians and motorists alike.

“We have been working wholeheartedly to offer a traffic snarl-free Agartala to the people of the city. Our drives to clear encroachment shall continue round the year,” he added.

The AMC’s sustained eviction initiative signals a firm administrative stance on urban discipline and infrastructure modernization. With plans for new parking facilities, a shopping complex, and green spaces, the civic body aims to balance enforcement with rehabilitation — a move that could redefine city management in Agartala.
