Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma targets Congress–Raijor Dal tie-up, signals major political disclosures involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi ahead of Assembly elections, intensifying political tensions and sharpening BJP’s offensive against the Opposition alliance.

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to escalate the political temperature in the state with a high-profile press conference scheduled for Sunday, where he has promised to unveil what he describes as a “wider political nexus” involving Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi. The announcement comes amid growing speculation over a possible electoral understanding between the Congress and the Akhil Gogoi-led Raijor Dal ahead of the upcoming Assam Assembly elections.

Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of the inauguration of newly constructed school buildings earlier this week, Sarma launched a sharp political attack on the Opposition, asserting that any alliance involving Congress and Raijor Dal stands no realistic chance of forming a government in Assam. He claimed that the February 8 press briefing would go beyond previous allegations and present the “entire network” that, according to him, is connected to Gaurav Gogoi.

The Chief Minister indicated that the forthcoming disclosures would carry significant political implications. While he did not reveal specific details, Sarma stressed that the information to be shared would expand on earlier claims related to Gogoi’s alleged foreign links and would place before the public what he termed as “important facts” that voters should be aware of before the elections.

Reacting to reports of a Congress–Raijor Dal tie-up, Sarma remarked that Opposition parties were free to form governments “anywhere else,” but categorically ruled out their prospects in Assam. He said the electorate in the state had consistently rejected such alliances and would continue to do so in the upcoming polls.

In a pointed attack on Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi, the Chief Minister said that the regional party leader would not be able to form a government in Assam “even in 500 years.” The remark added to the already sharp political rhetoric dominating Assam’s election discourse.

Sarma further alleged that Gaurav Gogoi was attempting to coordinate politically with Akhil Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad (AJP) president Lurinjyoti Gogoi in anticipation of a joint counter-strategy following Sunday’s press conference. According to the Chief Minister, these efforts were aimed at pre-emptively managing the political fallout of the BJP’s anticipated revelations.

“These moves are only to protect themselves from what is coming,” Sarma said, suggesting that the Opposition leadership was acting out of fear of the disclosures planned by the ruling party.

In a direct message to Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi, the Chief Minister said this was the “right time” for them to negotiate seat-sharing arrangements, implying that their political relevance would diminish after February 8. He claimed that once the press conference concludes, the Opposition’s bargaining power would be significantly weakened.

“They should take whatever political advantage they can now, because after February 8, the situation will change,” Sarma stated.

The Chief Minister’s remarks have further intensified the political atmosphere in Assam, where alliances, counter-alliances, and public accusations are increasingly shaping the narrative ahead of the Assembly elections. While the Congress and Raijor Dal have not officially confirmed a formal alliance, the speculation alone has triggered strong reactions from the ruling BJP.

Political observers note that Sarma’s aggressive posture reflects the high stakes involved as the election season approaches. With identity politics, regional aspirations, and national narratives intersecting in Assam, Sunday’s press conference is expected to draw significant attention from both political rivals and the public.

As the countdown to the elections continues, all eyes are now on the Chief Minister’s promised disclosures and how they may influence voter perception, Opposition unity, and the broader political landscape of Assam.
