A tragic interfaith love story ends in suicide as a young couple is found dead in Tripura’s Paharampur area. Police register an unnatural death case and launch an investigation amid family opposition and social pressure.
A tragic incident has shocked the local community after an interfaith couple was found dead in an isolated area under Paharampur Gram Panchayat, falling within the jurisdiction of Jatrapur police station. The young couple, who had reportedly been facing strong opposition from their families, are believed to have taken their own lives after repeated failed attempts to gain parental approval for their relationship.
The deceased have been identified as Nisha Mallik (24) and Rakesh Miah (25). According to police and local sources, the couple had eloped for the second time on January 28, hoping to start a new life together. However, persistent resistance from both families reportedly left them with no viable options.
Family members of Nisha Mallik lodged a missing complaint at the Melaghar police station shortly after she went missing. During the search process, police received information about two bodies hanging at the same location in a secluded area of Paharampur. Upon reaching the spot, authorities confirmed that the bodies were those of the missing couple.
Officer-in-Charge of Jatrapur police station, Sriti Kanta Bardhan, stated that police were aware of the missing complaint. “Before their whereabouts could be traced, we received information about two bodies found at the same place. On reaching the location, both were found dead,” he said.
Local residents revealed that the families of both individuals were well aware of their relationship. The couple had previously attempted to elope with the intention of marriage but were compelled to return home due to intense familial pressure and social resistance. Their relationship had reportedly remained under constant strain because of interfaith differences.
Police officials confirmed that prima facie evidence suggests suicide, but a case of unnatural death has been registered as per procedure. “The matter is under investigation, and all angles are being examined,” Bardhan added.

Rakesh Miah had been working at a salon in the Rangamura market area under North Paharpur Gram Panchayat in the Dhanpur Assembly constituency for the past few months. Further investigation is underway to determine the exact sequence of events leading to the tragic deaths.
The incident has reignited discussions around social acceptance, interfaith relationships, and the mental health pressures faced by young couples in conservative settings.
