Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans strict action against illegal traders and encroachments. Meetings led by Mayor Dipak Majumder focused on Howrah Market reforms, eviction drives, traffic congestion control, and lawful rehabilitation of genuine traders to ensure smoother urban management.
The Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) is preparing to launch a major crackdown on illegal trade activities and unauthorized encroachments across the city, following two high-level meetings chaired by Mayor Dipak Majumder on Thursday. The meetings primarily focused on the long-standing issues at Howrah Market and worsening traffic congestion in several key areas of Agartala.
The first meeting centered on the functioning of Howrah Market, one of the busiest commercial hubs in the city. During the discussions, AMC officials revealed that a section of traders has been operating without valid authorization. More alarmingly, serious allegations were raised that illegal narcotics are being sold under the cover of these unauthorized businesses, raising concerns over public safety and law enforcement.
Taking note of the gravity of the complaints, Mayor Dipak Majumder stated that the municipal authority would adopt a zero-tolerance approach toward illegal trading activities. He announced that eviction drives against unauthorized traders at Howrah Market would be carried out in the near future. However, he also assured that legitimate traders would not be affected unfairly.
To ensure minimal disruption to lawful businesses, the AMC plans to provide a well-organized alternative space where eligible traders can continue their operations in a legal and regulated manner. Several traders from Howrah Market attended the meeting and expressed their concerns regarding livelihoods, infrastructure, and fair rehabilitation. The Mayor assured them that transparency and fairness would be maintained during the implementation process.
Later in the day, a second crucial meeting was held involving the Municipal Commissioner, Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM), traffic police officials, and representatives from other concerned departments. This meeting addressed the persistent problem of traffic congestion and footpath encroachment across Agartala.
Officials agreed that fresh eviction drives would be conducted in multiple locations to clear illegal encroachments, particularly on footpaths and busy intersections. Such encroachments, authorities noted, are a major cause of traffic bottlenecks and inconvenience to pedestrians and commuters.

Mayor Majumder emphasized that strict action would be taken against habitual violators. A comprehensive traffic management plan was also discussed, aiming to improve road discipline, enhance pedestrian safety, and ensure smoother vehicular movement.
The AMC reiterated that these coordinated initiatives are designed not only to restore order in market areas like Howrah Market but also to improve the overall urban environment of Agartala. The administration believes that enforcing legality, coupled with proper planning and rehabilitation, will lead to a more organized, safer, and congestion-free city.
