Tension erupted in Panisagar’s Pekuchhara area after unauthorized religious announcements triggered a clash. Police and administration intervened swiftly, detaining four individuals and restoring order amid concerns over communal harmony and public safety.
Tension gripped the Pekuchhara area under Panisagar subdivision on Wednesday after an alleged unauthorized religious announcement sparked a clash between two groups, prompting swift police and administrative intervention to prevent further escalation.
According to local sources, the incident began when a Madrasa allegedly carried out loudspeaker announcements for a proposed Waz Mahfil (Islamic religious gathering) in a predominantly Hindu locality without obtaining prior permission from the district administration. Authorities had reportedly earlier denied permission for the event, citing the prevailing sensitive communal atmosphere and the need to maintain law and order in the region.
Despite the official refusal, announcements were allegedly made using a vehicle bearing registration number TR05C0762, which moved through residential lanes of the Hindu-majority area. Residents soon objected to the activity, questioning the legality of the announcements and demanding to know why administrative approval had been ignored. This led to a heated verbal exchange between local residents and those involved in the announcement.
The situation worsened when another vehicle, registration number TR05G1705, arrived at the spot carrying approximately 10 to 15 individuals. Eyewitnesses stated that the arrival of the second group intensified tensions, transforming the argument into a volatile confrontation.
Sources further claimed that during the altercation, certain provocative remarks were allegedly made referring to the recent death of Dipu Das, a local resident. These comments reportedly inflamed emotions, leading to widespread anger among locals. In the ensuing chaos, an agitated crowd allegedly vandalized both vehicles involved in the unauthorized announcement activity.
Upon receiving information, Panisagar Police, along with Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Sushanta Debbarma, rushed to the scene. Police personnel and administrative officials worked jointly to disperse the crowd, restore order, and prevent the situation from turning into a larger communal disturbance.
For safety reasons and preliminary questioning, four individuals linked to the miking activity were taken to Panisagar Police Station. Officials clarified that the individuals were detained primarily to ensure their security amid rising tensions and to ascertain the sequence of events.
