Tripura crossed 50,000 CNG-powered vehicles as Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha inaugurated a new CNG station in Gomati district. TNGCL expands clean-energy infrastructure with new stations, promoting eco-friendly mobility and reducing pollution across the state.
Tripura has crossed a major milestone in its clean-energy transition, with more than 50,000 vehicles now running on Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) across the state, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha announced on Wednesday. Highlighting the state’s steady shift toward eco-friendly mobility, the Chief Minister said the growing number of CNG-powered vehicles reflected both government commitment and strong public acceptance of cleaner fuel options.

Dr. Saha was speaking during the inauguration of the Tripura Natural Gas Company Limited (TNGCL)’s new CNG station at Khilpara in Gomati district. The new station, built at a cost of ₹8 crore, is expected to serve as a major boost for auto drivers, taxi operators, and private vehicle owners in the region. The Chief Minister added that CNG has been widely acknowledged worldwide as a cost-effective, environment-friendly fuel, making it a crucial component in the evolution of modern, sustainable transport.
He announced that additional CNG stations would soon be constructed at Fatikchhara and Bodhjungnagar in West Tripura district as part of the state government’s long-term plan to expand clean-energy infrastructure. “CNG has special acceptance globally,” Dr. Saha said. “Its popularity rises with the progress of civilization and technology. Any developed country or city today ensures that clean fuel options like CNG are widely available. This new station in Khilpara will act as a mother station and gradually supply CNG to various other locations.”
The Chief Minister expressed gratitude to TNGCL officials for their consistent efforts in strengthening the state’s natural gas network. He noted that the company planned to expand its services beyond Agartala and Udaipur, aiming to set up CNG stations in several new zones across Tripura.
Dr. Saha emphasized that clean energy is essential for the state’s progress and that the growing number of CNG stations had already begun delivering positive results. Since 2018, TNGCL has commissioned 31 new CNG stations across different districts of the state. These stations are now operational in multiple locations and are significantly contributing to the reduction of air pollution.
“With the rising use of CNG, people can save money while also ensuring a healthier environment,” he said. “Today, TNGCL supplies fuel to more than 50,000 vehicles, and the demand continues to grow.” He also informed that upgrades were being planned for the CNG stations located at Arundhuti Nagar and Barjala to improve service capacity and efficiency.
Dr. Saha added that increasing the number of CNG stations has strengthened public trust in the governance of both the Centre and the state. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s focus on sustainable and green development has inspired many citizens to shift to cleaner fuel options.
The Chief Minister also disclosed that two plots had already been allocated for new CNG stations in Mohanpur, while further steps would be taken after consultations with TNGCL to establish stations at Khayerpur-Amtali Bypass, Bagma, Amarpur, and Ampi in Gomati district.

The inauguration event was attended by several dignitaries, including Finance Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, Industries and Commerce Minister Santana Chakma, Gomati Zilla Sabhadhipati Debal Debroy, MLAs Abhishek Debroy and Jitendra Majumder, Udaipur Municipal Council Chairman Shital Chandra Majumder, Gomati District Magistrate Rinku Lather, Superintendent of Police Kiran Kumar K, and TNGCL Managing Director Pralay Patra, among others.
TNGCL, established in July 1990, is one of Eastern India’s fastest-growing natural gas distribution companies. A joint venture between GAIL (India) Ltd., Tripura Industrial Development Corporation, and Assam Gas Company Ltd., TNGCL supplies clean and cost-effective natural gas to the domestic, commercial, industrial, and transportation sectors across West Tripura and Gomati districts.
In a statement, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha said, “Compressed Natural Gas is gaining popularity as an environment-friendly and cost-effective fuel. The Khilpara station will effectively cater to the needs of the local population.”
