Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) accelerates plans to introduce the Vande Bharat Express on the Silchar–Agartala route, aiming for a February launch. With electrification and trial runs nearly complete, Tripura and Assam may witness a major boost in high-speed rail connectivity.

In a development that could significantly boost connectivity to Tripura, the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is stepping up efforts to introduce Vande Bharat Express services on the Lumding–Badarpur section, paving the way for a likely Silchar–Agartala route to be among the first to start operations. Sources indicate that the high-speed service could roll out as early as February next year.

Though no official announcement has been made, rail department sources said senior officials from NFR’s Lumding division are conducting daily inspections to ensure the tracks are fully prepared for Vande Bharat operations. The heightened administrative activity is evident with the posting of an additional Additional Divisional Engineer (ADEN) in Haflong.

The push to advance the launch timeline is believed to be influenced by the upcoming Assam assembly elections, with February set as the tentative deadline. The Silchar–Agartala corridor, where electrification work is complete and trial runs from Arunachal station to Agartala have been successful, has emerged as the strongest contender for the inaugural service.

Electrification between Silchar–Badarpur and Lumding–New Haflong has also been completed, along with trial runs. Work on the Harangajao–Badarpur stretch is progressing rapidly, further strengthening the case for early commissioning of the Silchar–Agartala Vande Bharat route. A Silchar–Guwahati service is expected to follow.

Meanwhile, preparations are also underway to introduce one Vande Bharat Express and one Amrit Bharat Express on the Guwahati–Lumding–Dibrugarh route by February. The additions are expected to substantially upgrade passenger connectivity across Assam and the wider Northeast.
