Tripura Congress alleges a sharp rise in crime, political violence and administrative collapse across the state, accusing the ruling alliance of lawlessness, misuse of power and attacks on opposition members. The party demands urgent intervention to restore public safety and democratic governance.

The Tripura Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) on Saturday expressed deep concern over what it described as a severe deterioration in the law and order situation across the state. In a strongly worded press statement, the opposition party alleged that Tripura has witnessed a surge in crime, political violence and administrative breakdown in recent weeks, claiming that “lawlessness has reached alarming levels.”

The statement, issued by TPCC spokesperson Prabir Chakraborty, accused the state government of projecting a misleading image of efficient governance while citizens continue to live in fear. “The government repeatedly claims that Tripura is experiencing peace and development. But the ground reality tells a different story,” Chakraborty stated. “People are living under fear and insecurity as crime rates continue to rise.”

According to the Congress, a series of shocking incidents since October has shaken public confidence in the administration. These include the rape and murder of a 14-month-old girl, the rape and murder of a 72-year-old elderly woman, six murders, five rapes, two gang rapes, seven cases of sexual assault, and 33 unnatural deaths reported in various districts.

Chakraborty said the brutal nature of these crimes reflects a deepening collapse of governance. “When such horrific crimes occur repeatedly and the government fails to ensure justice or prevent further incidents, it shows an administrative failure at every level,” he said.

The party also highlighted a major narcotics seizure on a train in Jirania earlier this week, warning that the proliferation of illegal drugs poses a “serious threat to national security.” The Congress alleged that the drug trade is flourishing due to the involvement or protection of politically connected groups.

Violence During Shutdown and Attacks on Security Personnel

The statement further accused a section of the ruling alliance of unleashing violence during a shutdown in Kamalpur’s Santir Bazar on 23 October. According to the Congress, several areas witnessed targeted assaults on civilians, looting of shops, arson and attacks on police personnel. The party claimed that the violence was perpetrated by ruling-party-affiliated groups aiming to suppress opposition voices.

The TPCC also alleged that Border Security Force (BSF) personnel and state police officers were assaulted by groups linked to ruling-party-backed smugglers. “When even security personnel are not safe, what protection can ordinary citizens expect?” Chakraborty asked.

Fuel Supply Disruption and Factional Infighting

Addressing the recent disruption in the state’s fuel supply, the Congress accused members of the ruling party of blocking tankers due to internal disputes over “illegal earnings.” The party said that although the government deployed police escorts to move the tankers, it failed to take legal action against those responsible for causing the blockade.

“The government is functioning to protect vested interests, not public welfare,” the statement said. “Instead of punishing those who created an artificial crisis, it chose to shield them.”

Threats to Traders and Attacks on Property

The TPCC further alleged that ruling-party-linked groups in Border Gol Chakkar and Kalikapur areas of Agartala were intimidating traders, attacking homes and shops and vandalising property with little intervention from the police. “Business owners are being forced to operate under threats from politically motivated gangs,” the party claimed.

The Congress also referred to recent incidents in Dharmanagar, where drug-linked groups reportedly vandalised homes and assaulted local residents, and in Kumarghat, where a ₹60-crore PWD tender meeting allegedly turned violent. The incident reportedly involved attacks on contractors, threats to engineers and damage to government property.

“In almost all these incidents, those involved are influential leaders or associates of the ruling party,” Chakraborty alleged. “They openly evade arrest or secure quick bail despite facing serious criminal charges.”

Attacks on Congress Offices and Symbols

The party condemned the vandalism of its Lakshmichhara unit office in Jolaibari, which it said was targeted following the Bihar Assembly election results. The Congress also accused ruling-party workers of damaging the pedestal of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s statue in Kamalpur. Several opposition party offices were also reportedly attacked and set on fire across different districts.

Congress Accuses Government of Weakening Democratic Institutions

In one of the strongest political allegations, the TPCC accused both the state and central governments of undermining democratic institutions. “The ruling party has brought even the Election Commission under its influence,” the statement read. The party alleged that the government treats public offices, state machinery and taxpayer money as “party property.”
