Tripura Police launches a strict state-wide enforcement drive against juvenile driving under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, imposing heavy fines, legal action, registration cancellation, and license restrictions to enhance road safety and prevent accidents.

In a decisive move to strengthen road safety and prevent rising cases of illegal vehicle use by minors, the Tripura Police has initiated a strict enforcement drive targeting juvenile driving across the state. The announcement was made through an official press release issued on Friday by the Office of the Director General of Police (DGP), Agartala.

The drive has been launched under Section 199A of the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988, which clearly prohibits individuals below the age of 18 from operating any motorized vehicle. The amended provisions of the Act place significant responsibility on parents, guardians, and vehicle owners to ensure that minors do not gain access to motorbikes, scooters, cars, or any other motorized transport.

Strict Penalties for Guardians and Vehicle Owners

The press note highlights that any violation of Section 199A will attract severe punishment. If a minor is caught driving, the vehicle owner or guardian will be fined up to ₹25,000. Additionally, the responsible adult may face imprisonment of up to 3 years, depending on the severity of the violation and the circumstances of the case.

Apart from legal penalties, the vehicle involved in the offence will also face consequences. The press release states that the registration of the offending vehicle may be cancelled for one year, making it unlawful to operate during that period.

Moreover, juvenile offenders will face long-term repercussions. As per the Act, minors found violating driving laws will be barred from obtaining a driving license until they turn 25 years old. Authorities say this provision aims to create a stronger deterrent and promote responsible behaviour among young individuals.

Police Emphasize Public Safety and Accident Prevention

A senior official from the Tripura Police Headquarters said the enforcement drive comes at a crucial time when cases of minors riding motorcycles and scooters are becoming increasingly common, posing grave risks to themselves and others on the road.

“Juvenile driving is a serious threat to public safety. Allowing minors to operate motorized vehicles puts their lives and the lives of others in danger. Strict enforcement of the Motor Vehicles Act is essential to prevent accidents and uphold the rule of law.”

Another police official appealed to parents and guardians, urging them to act responsibly:

“We request all parents and guardians to ensure that no minor is allowed to drive any motor vehicle. The responsibility lies with the adults. We are committed to strict enforcement to safeguard the people of Tripura.”

Awareness and Enforcement Measures Intensified

As part of the campaign, police personnel across all districts have been instructed to conduct roadside checks, monitor school zones, and keep a close watch on markets and public areas where young riders are often spotted. The drive will include:

  • Random vehicle inspections

  • Document verification

  • Seizure of vehicles driven by minors

  • Issuing of fines on the spot

  • Mandatory counseling for juvenile offenders

Additionally, the Tripura Police will collaborate with educational institutions to conduct awareness sessions. Schools and colleges will be encouraged to inform students about the dangers of underage driving and the legal implications involved.

Public Response and Community Involvement

Several parents and local residents have welcomed the initiative, calling it a necessary step to curb reckless riding among teenagers. Many believe that stricter enforcement will help reduce road accidents, which often involve underage riders who lack training, experience, and maturity.

Road safety experts also applauded the police action, emphasizing that enforcement combined with awareness is essential to bring behavioural change.

Tripura Police Urges Full Cooperation

In its concluding message, the Tripura Police reiterated its commitment to ensuring safer roads across the state.

“Our primary goal is to protect lives. We urge citizens to cooperate with the enforcement teams and help create a safer traffic environment for everyone.”

The police emphasized that the drive will continue indefinitely and that no leniency will be shown to violations involving minors.
