Tripura signs MoU with AIIMS Delhi to transform AGMC and GBP Hospital into a medical hub. CM Saha announces plans for super-speciality care, new medical colleges, and advanced healthcare infrastructure in the state.

In a landmark move aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and enhancing medical services in Tripura, the state government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), Delhi. The agreement was finalized on Wednesday in New Delhi in the presence of Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha, who also holds the Health and Family Welfare portfolio.

According to officials from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the MoU formalizes collaboration between AIIMS, Delhi, and the Health and Family Welfare Department of Tripura, with the objective of transforming state and district-level hospitals into Centres of Excellence. These Centres will provide super-speciality healthcare and advanced medical education in line with international standards.

Chief Minister Saha expressed immense pride over the MoU, stating, “This agreement is a significant milestone for the development of medical colleges and hospitals across Tripura. Our vision is to upgrade Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC) and Govind Ballabh Pant Hospital (GBP Hospital) into a medical hub equipped with state-of-the-art facilities, modeled on the excellence of AIIMS, Delhi.”

Highlighting the global reputation of AIIMS, Delhi, CM Saha, who is a dental surgeon himself, noted that the institution is renowned for its pioneering work in medical research, education, and advanced patient care. “This collaboration will significantly enhance the overall quality and reach of healthcare services in Tripura, benefiting citizens across the state,” he added.

The MoU signing ceremony at Tripura Bhawan, New Delhi, was attended by AIIMS Director M. Srinivas and senior officials from the Tripura Health Department. The move comes after a four-member team from AIIMS, Delhi, led by Director Srinivas, visited AGMC, GBP Hospital, and other government hospitals in June. The team assessed existing health services and infrastructure at the request of Chief Minister Saha.

In related developments, CM Saha held a meeting with Union Health and Family Welfare Minister J.P. Nadda on Tuesday in New Delhi. The discussions focused on improving health infrastructure, addressing manpower requirements, and exploring the establishment of new medical facilities in the state.

A senior CMO official revealed that the Chief Minister proposed the setting up of a new medical college at Kulai in Dhalai district, one of the state’s aspirational regions, under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. Plans were also discussed for a Tertiary Ophthalmology Hospital in Agartala and an Immunology Lab to support organ transplant services at AGMC and GBP Hospital.

During the meeting, CM Saha sought Union support for procuring advanced medical instruments for the Super Speciality Block at AGMC. He also requested additional funds under the Ayushman Bharat – Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PMJAY) to clear pending claims, ensuring uninterrupted healthcare services to Tripura’s residents.

Currently, Tripura hosts three medical colleges: Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), Tripura Medical College (TMC), and Tripura Santiniketan Medical College (TSMC). While TSMC operates as a private institution, TMC is governed by a state government-constituted society. With AIIMS Delhi’s guidance, the state aims to upgrade AGMC and GBP Hospital into cutting-edge healthcare facilities, further positioning Tripura as a regional medical hub.

The collaboration is expected to bring advanced medical education, research opportunities, and super-speciality care closer to Tripura’s population. Experts believe that the initiative will not only reduce the need for patients to travel outside the state for specialized treatment but also attract skilled medical professionals to the region, ultimately raising the standard of healthcare across Tripura.
