Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the Assam government for making “hurried arrests” in the Zubeen Garg death probe, urging transparency, fairness, and acknowledgment from the late singer’s family before declaring justice, amid rising political tension in the state.

Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi on Friday launched a sharp attack on the Assam government, accusing it of making “hurried arrests” in the ongoing probe into the death of celebrated Assamese singer Zubeen Garg. Gogoi said that justice in such a sensitive and high-profile case cannot be declared by political leaders but must be recognised by the late artist’s family and validated through due legal process.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Gogoi expressed deep concern over the manner in which the Assam Police have handled the investigation. “When such serious allegations are made, it is the responsibility of the Assam Police to ensure that evidence is collected properly so that it stands in court,” he said.

The Congress leader stressed that for serious charges such as murder or culpable homicide, the investigation must be carried out with utmost professionalism and impartiality. He alleged that the kind of detailed and methodical inquiry expected in such a case had not taken place. “Unfortunately, the kind of meticulous inquiry that should have happened has not been done. Instead, arrests have been made in haste, and that raises questions about the intent of the authorities,” Gogoi remarked.

Reacting strongly to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party’s (BJP) claim that “justice has been delivered” in the Zubeen Garg case, Gogoi said that such political declarations were both premature and insensitive. “Does the Chief Minister think the people of Assam don’t understand the law?” he asked. “Justice will only be acknowledged when Zubeen Garg’s family — especially Garima Garg — comes forward and says they have received it. Until then, no matter what the BJP claims, we will not accept that justice has been served.”

Zubeen Garg, one of Assam’s most iconic singers and cultural figures, passed away under circumstances that have since stirred controversy and widespread public debate. His death has led to numerous questions about whether proper investigative procedures were followed. Gogoi’s comments have added fresh political weight to the public’s demand for transparency.

Gogoi also connected the controversy to a larger issue of governance and accountability, urging the Assam government to handle sensitive investigations with sincerity rather than using them for political advantage. “The CM’s duty is not to issue claims but to ensure that investigations are conducted honestly and that evidence is presented before the court,” he said, underlining that justice must not only be done but also be seen to be done.

The Congress MP further emphasised that fairness and professionalism in criminal investigations are essential for maintaining public trust in law enforcement institutions. “Every Assamese citizen deserves to know the truth behind Zubeen Garg’s death,” Gogoi stated. “When a cultural icon like him dies, it’s not just a personal loss — it’s a matter that affects the entire state’s emotional and cultural identity. That’s why the investigation should be free from political interference.”

In addition to addressing the probe, Gogoi took the opportunity to highlight the growing momentum of the Congress party in Assam. He noted that several political figures and former leaders have recently joined Congress, strengthening the party’s organisational base across the state. “It’s encouraging to see that many young people with social service backgrounds are stepping into politics through the Congress platform,” he said.

Among the recent joinings, Gogoi mentioned former MLA Virendra Sehtiya and several BJP members “suffering from mental distress” due to internal conflicts, who have switched sides to Congress. “Our doors are open to everyone who wants to work sincerely for Assam’s progress,” he added.

Gogoi’s remarks come amid growing political tension in the state, where the handling of the Zubeen Garg investigation has become a matter of both emotional resonance and political contention. While the state government maintains that justice has been delivered, Gogoi’s insistence on fairness and transparency reflects an emerging demand among the people — that the truth must be established beyond any doubt, and that justice must be recognised by those most deeply affected: Zubeen Garg’s family.
