Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla highlights the state’s creativity, resilience, and potential as a global trade hub at the Manipur Global Buyers and Sellers Summit, promoting entrepreneurship, cross-border trade, and innovation under the theme ‘Bridging Business Sans Borders’.
Manipur Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla on Friday described the state as a vibrant confluence of nature, creativity, and resilience, highlighting its potential as a key gateway for global trade and investment in the Northeast. Speaking at the inaugural session of the Manipur Global Buyers and Sellers Summit held at the City Convention Centre, Imphal, the Governor underscored the state’s immense opportunities for growth and its diverse cultural and economic identity.
Bhalla noted that Manipur’s natural abundance — from its lush green hills to fertile valleys — makes it a dream destination for anyone seeking unique experiences and business opportunities. “The state represents a unique blend of natural abundance, creativity and resilience — a dream come true for anyone seeking diverse opportunities,” he said.
The Governor praised the state’s wide range of distinctive products that have begun to gain recognition both nationally and internationally. Among them are Manipur’s famous black rice (Chak-Hao), organic produce, and a variety of handloom and handicraft items that reflect the rich artistry and ingenuity of its people. He remarked that these products embody the spirit of innovation deeply rooted in Manipur’s tradition.
Highlighting the strength of Manipur’s human resources, Bhalla said that the people of the state are skilled, adaptable, and enterprising. He added that Manipur’s IT and service sectors have shown notable progress, contributing significantly to employment generation and innovation. “The state’s youth and entrepreneurs are driving a new wave of change, embracing digital platforms and sustainable business models,” he added.
Acknowledging the recent challenges faced by the state, Bhalla commended the resilience of the people of Manipur. He pointed out that despite difficult circumstances, local communities — including those that were displaced — have re-engaged in productive economic activities, creating value-driven products that are now reaching national and global markets.
The Governor described the Manipur Global Buyers and Sellers Summit as “more than an event — a statement of confidence in Manipur’s potential.” He said that the summit stands as a symbol of the state’s determination to strengthen its position as a strategic hub for trade and commerce, not only within the Northeast but across international borders.
Commending the collaborative efforts behind the event, Bhalla praised the Directorate of Trade, Commerce and Industries, Manipur Industrial Development Corporation Ltd. (MANIDCO), and the Manipur Chamber of Commerce & Industry (MCCI) for their proactive approach to empowering entrepreneurs, especially women-led enterprises. He also acknowledged the support of the Raising and Accelerating MSME Performance (RAMP) initiative under the Union Ministry of MSME, which aims to enhance the performance and competitiveness of small and medium enterprises in the region.
“The summit is a reflection of how collective efforts by government bodies and private sectors can bring transformative change. With improved logistics, expanding digital connectivity, and proximity to Southeast Asian countries, Manipur is well-positioned to emerge as a major player in cross-border trade and sustainable economic growth,” Bhalla remarked.
The two-day summit, held under the theme ‘Bridging Business Sans Borders,’ brings together entrepreneurs, investors, and policymakers to explore opportunities for collaboration and innovation.
During the event, Governor Bhalla visited various stalls showcasing the state’s indigenous products — from handwoven textiles and bamboo crafts to organic food items and eco-friendly innovations. The exhibition displayed the entrepreneurial zeal of Manipuri artisans and small industries, attracting interest from domestic and international buyers.
The summit also saw participation from neighbouring countries such as Myanmar, Bangladesh, and Thailand, alongside representatives from Japan and several North Eastern states of India. This wide participation underscored Manipur’s growing prominence as a regional trade hub connecting India to Southeast Asia through the Act East Policy.
