Government schools account for 56% of enrolments, Says Education Survey 2025

Government schools play a pivotal role in providing education across the country, accounting for around 56 per cent of total enrolments. The number is higher in rural areas, where 66 per cent of students are enrolled, in comparison to around 30 per cent in urban areas. According to the Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education, 2025, the Private unaided recognised schools account for around 32 per cent of enrolment nationwide. The average per student expenditure made by households on school education during the current academic year in government schools was estimated at two thousand 863 rupees, while it was significantly higher at over 25 thousand rupees in non-government schools. The Course fees have emerged as the largest education expense made by households for the education of children. The highest average expenditure per student during the current academic year was on course fees at over seven thousand rupees, followed by textbooks and stationery at around two thousand rupees at the all-India level. The survey revealed that the urban households pay significantly more across all categories.
Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation informed that the primary objective of the Comprehensive Modular Survey: Education, was to generate national-level estimates of average expenditure on school education and private coaching during the current academic year.
