The Manipur government announces a major police expansion with a new Secretariat Police Station in Imphal and 12 SDPO posts across nine districts to improve law enforcement, supervision, and response. The move aims to modernise the state’s policing system and enhance administrative efficiency in critical and emerging areas.
In a major step toward strengthening the law enforcement system in Manipur, the state government has announced a significant expansion of its police infrastructure. This includes the establishment of a new police station in the state capital, Imphal, and the creation of 12 new Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) posts across nine districts.
The move, aimed at modernising the state’s policing framework, is expected to enhance administrative efficiency, improve case supervision, and ensure a faster response to emerging law and order situations. A senior police official described the decision as a “strategic step to strengthen policing capabilities, especially in newly created and existing districts where administrative oversight is critical.”
New Secretariat Police Station in Mantripukhri
As part of this reform, the government will establish a new police station in the rapidly developing Mantripukhri area in Imphal West district. The need for the new Secretariat Police Station arises from the impending relocation of the State Civil Secretariat and Police Headquarters to this zone. A statement from the Police Headquarters highlighted that this area will soon house several key government institutions including the Manipur High Court, the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT), and the Forest Department complex.
The Secretariat Police Station will play a crucial role in maintaining law and order, ensuring adequate security, and delivering essential policing services to this new administrative and institutional hub.
New SDPO Post for the New Capital Complex
To support the operations of the new Secretariat Police Station and improve oversight in the surrounding region, the government has sanctioned the creation of a dedicated SDPO for the New Capital Complex. This new SDPO post will fall under the jurisdiction of Imphal East District. The officer will be responsible for supervising both the proposed Secretariat Police Station and the existing Heingang Police Station. This restructuring is aimed at ensuring more coordinated command, improved crime investigation, and better deployment of police personnel in critical areas.
Strengthening Policing in Other Districts
Beyond the capital region, the Manipur government has also addressed the pressing need for more supervisory officers in several other districts. Notably, five newly created districts Kangpokpi, Tengnoupal, Kamjong, Pherzawl, and Noney have been facing a severe shortage of SDPOs. These districts have had limited administrative oversight, leading to challenges in force deployment, crime response, and law enforcement coordination.
To resolve these issues, the government has approved the creation of multiple SDPO posts across these districts. This expansion is expected to significantly improve the operational efficiency of local police units, providing much-needed support in maintaining law and order.
In addition, districts like Chandel, Churachandpur, and Tamenglong, which currently operate with a single SDPO, have also been identified as needing additional supervisory manpower. The present structure in these regions has been found inadequate to address growing challenges, including crime investigation and complex law enforcement scenarios.
A Citizen-Centric Approach to Modern Policing
According to the official statement, these developments reflect the Manipur government’s broader vision of modernising the police force in a sustainable and citizen-centric manner. By creating new police stations and supervisory posts, the government aims to build a more responsive, accountable, and strategically positioned police organisation.
The statement concluded, “The creation of the Secretariat Police Station and additional SDPO posts marks a progressive step toward strengthening law and order mechanisms across the state. The Manipur Police Department remains committed to building a modern, efficient, and people-focused policing system.”
