Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport saw strong growth in Q1 FY 2025–26, handling 1.81 million passengers and 12,470 aircraft movements. With record-breaking cargo volumes and increased connectivity to major cities, LGBIA strengthens its role as a vital aviation hub in Northeast India.

Guwahati’s Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport (LGBIA) has recorded a robust performance in the first quarter of the financial year 2025–26, registering significant year-on-year growth in both aircraft movements and passenger traffic. The airport’s performance highlights its growing prominence as a key aviation hub in Northeast India.

According to a statement released by airport officials on Friday, the airport witnessed 12,470 aircraft movements and handled 1.81 million passengers between April and June 2025. Both figures reflect double-digit growth compared to the same period last year, showcasing increased demand for air connectivity in the region.

A spokesperson from LGBIA stated that this growth reaffirms the airport’s role as a vital gateway to Northeast India. “The continued rise in passenger and aircraft movement volumes underscores the success of recent operational enhancements and the sustained collaboration with airline partners, regulatory authorities, and other stakeholders,” she said.

The highest single-day footfall during the quarter was recorded on April 10, 2025, when 21,594 passengers passed through the airport terminal. This peak indicates the growing preference for air travel through Guwahati, particularly among those traveling to or from the Northeast.

Delhi, Kolkata, and Bengaluru emerged as the top three destinations in terms of passenger volume, reinforcing the airport’s strong connectivity with key metro cities. These routes have consistently attracted high traffic, reflecting both business and leisure travel demands.

Cargo operations at LGBIA have also shown encouraging performance. The Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL), which manages the airport, recorded its highest-ever single-day cargo handling on June 28, 2025. A total of 42.43 metric tonnes (MT) were processed, surpassing the previous record of 40.43 MT set last year — an increase of 4.95%.

The strong cargo performance is indicative of Guwahati’s increasing importance as a logistics hub, supporting the movement of goods across Northeast India and beyond. This is particularly significant for the export of regional products such as tea, fruits, handicrafts, and perishable items.

The ongoing development of LGBIA has been supported by substantial investments in infrastructure, digital technology, and customer service enhancements. These improvements have streamlined airport operations and enhanced the passenger experience, making LGBIA one of the more efficient and traveler-friendly airports in the region.

The airport is managed by Guwahati International Airport Limited (GIAL), a joint venture under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model. GIAL is operated by Adani Airport Holdings Limited (AAHL), a subsidiary of Adani Enterprises, under a 50-year concession agreement with the Airports Authority of India (AAI).

Through continuous modernization efforts and strategic partnerships, the airport aims to further improve its service capacity and connectivity. Officials believe that these efforts will drive even higher volumes in the coming quarters and contribute meaningfully to the socio-economic development of the Northeast.

With improved connectivity to major cities and a surge in both passenger and cargo traffic, Guwahati Airport is on a steady path to becoming a central player in India’s aviation network. Its growth story also highlights the increasing mobility of people and goods from the northeastern states, marking a positive trend in regional integration and development.
