A brutal machete attack in Shalbagan, Tripura, left four injured and one dead. The violence, carried out by two attackers, has shocked the community. Police have arrested two suspects and launched an investigation. The deceased, Rakesh Debnath, succumbed to injuries on Monday. Tensions ease as authorities restore normalcy.

A horrifying act of violence unfolded in Tripura’s Shalbagan locality under the Airport Police Station on Sunday night, when two men launched a gruesome machete attack that left four people injured and claimed one life. The incident, which occurred around 9 PM, has left the local community in shock and distress.

According to the police, the attackers — identified as Mona Debnath, also known as “Mona Don,” and Khokan Das — allegedly launched a brutal assault using sharp machetes on two individuals, Bapan Debnath and Sandip Mukherjee, attempting to kill them in cold blood. The victims suffered grievous injuries in the sudden and ferocious attack.

In a remarkable show of courage and unity, local residents, alarmed by the commotion, quickly intervened. As the assailants attempted to escape, the crowd managed to apprehend both Mona and Khokan. They were subsequently restrained by the locals and handed over to police officials. Fire and emergency services, along with the police, rushed to the scene, and the injured were transported to GBP Hospital for urgent medical care.

Tragically, one of the victims, identified as Rakesh Debnath, who sustained serious injuries, succumbed to his wounds early Monday morning. The loss of life has intensified the community’s grief and raised further questions about the rising trend of violence in the area.

“Rakesh Debnath died due to his injuries in the early hours of Monday. We have registered two separate cases related to the attack and arrested two persons. Both were produced before the court today,” said Sub-Inspector Parijit Malakar of the Airport Police Station.

The condition of one of the other victims remains critical, with medical personnel working tirelessly to stabilize him. Hospital sources confirmed that the machete wounds were deep and life-threatening, underscoring the vicious nature of the attack.

Officer-in-Charge Abhijit Mondal informed that a full-scale investigation is currently underway. “We are exploring all angles, including the motive behind the assault. The situation in Shalbagan has returned to normal. We urge residents to remain calm,” Mondal said.

Meanwhile, disturbing details have emerged about one of the attackers. Local sources revealed that Khokan Das has a known criminal history, including a previous attempt to murder his own brother and sister-in-law using similar weapons. He had reportedly served time in prison for that earlier crime.

This shocking revelation has only deepened public concern and triggered calls for stricter law enforcement in the locality. Residents fear that if such individuals are allowed to roam freely, further acts of violence may occur.

Community leaders and residents alike have expressed anguish over the incident. “This is not the Shalbagan we used to know. We are afraid for our families,” said a local shopkeeper. Another resident stated, “We appreciate the swift action taken by police, but we demand that justice be delivered quickly.”

The chilling nature of the attack — involving premeditated violence with deadly weapons — has added urgency to the ongoing investigation. Police sources indicated that they are reviewing CCTV footage from the area and interviewing witnesses to piece together the full sequence of events.

Security in the neighborhood has since been heightened, and police patrols have been increased to restore a sense of safety among the residents. While immediate threats appear to have subsided, the emotional scars left by the event will take time to heal.

Authorities have assured the public that all necessary measures will be taken to ensure justice for the victims and prevent such incidents in the future. For now, the people of Shalbagan mourn a life lost to senseless violence and hope for the recovery of the injured.
