Tripura’s first Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) permanent campus will be developed on 50 acres at Mohanpur. Minister Ratan Lal Nath highlighted IIIT Agartala’s placement record, industry partnerships and opportunities to strengthen technical education, research and innovation for Tripura’s youth.
A major milestone in Tripura’s technical education sector was marked on Thursday as the foundation stone was laid for the permanent campus of the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Agartala at Mohanpur. Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Minister Ratan Lal Nath attended the ceremony in the presence of Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu, describing the initiative as an important step towards expanding opportunities in higher education, research and technological innovation.
The proposed campus will be developed across 50 acres of land and will include academic blocks, hostel facilities and residential quarters. The new infrastructure is expected to support the institute’s expanding academic activities and create a stronger environment for technical learning, research and innovation in Tripura.
Addressing the programme, Nath said IIIT Agartala had demonstrated that students from Tripura possessed the talent and ability to compete at national and international levels. He said the establishment of a permanent campus would further strengthen the institute’s academic capabilities and help prepare students for emerging opportunities in the technology sector.
The minister congratulated everyone associated with the project and described the foundation stone-laying ceremony as a significant moment in the development of the institute.

IIIT Agartala began its academic journey on June 25, 2018. Since then, the institution has gradually expanded its academic and technical capabilities, with a focus on industry exposure and employment opportunities for students.
According to Nath, five batches have completed their academic programmes, comprising a total of 110 students. The average placement rate across these batches has remained above 80 per cent, while the first batch recorded a 100 per cent placement rate.
The minister also highlighted the highest annual salary package secured by a student, which stood at Rs. 21.99 lakh. Companies such as Amazon, Red Hat and Media.net have been associated with employment opportunities for students, reflecting the institute’s growing connections with the technology industry.
Nath said the permanent campus would provide scope for further expansion of academic programmes and research facilities. He emphasised that students should aim to develop technological products and solutions capable of addressing challenges beyond the boundaries of Tripura.
Encouraging students to think globally, he referred to technology hubs such as Bengaluru, Singapore, London and Silicon Valley as examples of places where innovative ideas could make a wider impact. At the same time, he stressed that students should remain connected to Tripura’s needs and use their knowledge to contribute to the state’s development.

The minister called for stronger partnerships between IIIT Agartala and technology companies, data and research institutions, and international organisations. He said greater collaboration could create more opportunities for internships, live projects, mentorship programmes, innovation challenges and entrepreneurship.
According to Nath, such initiatives would help bridge the gap between classroom learning and the practical requirements of the modern economy. He also stressed the importance of building an academic environment where students are encouraged to ask questions, challenge conventional thinking and develop innovative solutions.
The campus project is expected to provide a foundation for strengthening technical education and creating opportunities for young people interested in information technology and related fields. Expanded infrastructure could also support research activities and closer engagement with industry, subject to the institute’s future development plans.
The ceremony was attended by Lt. Gen. (Dr.) K. Himalay Singh (Retd.), Chairman of the Board of Governors of IIIT Agartala; Minister of State for Industries and Commerce Brishaketu Debbarma; and IIIT Agartala Director Prof. Abhay Kumar, along with other dignitaries.
