Agartala witnessed severe traffic congestion on Chaturthi and Panchami nights during Durga Puja 2026, exposing gaps in traffic management. Commuters and pandal-hoppers faced delays across major roads, markets and shopping areas, raising concerns over festival traffic preparedness.

Severe traffic congestion across Agartala on Chaturthi and Panchami nights has raised concerns over the preparedness and effectiveness of the city’s traffic management system as Durga Puja celebrations gather momentum. With large numbers of people taking to the streets for pandal-hopping and festive shopping, commuters and visitors have faced prolonged delays at several busy junctions, commercial areas and major roads.

The growing rush of vehicles and pedestrians during the festive season was widely anticipated. However, traffic movement at several important locations remained sluggish, causing inconvenience to families visiting puja pandals, shoppers heading to markets and other road users travelling across the city.

Pandal-hopping began gaining momentum from Chaturthi night, with crowds gathering at prominent puja venues and shopping destinations. Instead of smooth traffic movement supported by timely regulation and adequate deployment of personnel, several stretches witnessed congestion that left motorists struggling to make progress.

The road connecting Post Office Chowmuhani and Kaman Chowmuhani was among the stretches affected by the growing rush. Crowds around commercial establishments and other busy points contributed to traffic pressure in the area.

Maharajganj Market Road, one of Agartala’s important commercial corridors, also experienced congestion as shoppers and festival-goers increased their movement. Similar difficulties were reported on the stretch from Bidurkarta Chowmuhani to Astabal Ground and between RMS Chowmuhani and IGM Chowmuhani.

Traffic congestion was also reported along the Badharghat–Siddhi Ashram stretch, while other locations across the city faced difficulties as the number of vehicles increased. The situation was particularly challenging near shopping malls, popular commercial destinations and CNG stations, where vehicles frequently slowed down or came to a standstill.

Vehicles stopping near crowded areas to pick up passengers, combined with the movement of pedestrians and shoppers, further affected traffic flow. As a result, even relatively short journeys became time-consuming, leaving families heading out for pandal-hopping and other commuters frustrated.

The congestion has raised questions about whether sufficient arrangements were in place to manage the predictable increase in traffic during Durga Puja. The annual festival attracts large crowds, and the movement of private vehicles, two-wheelers, public transport and pedestrians places considerable pressure on Agartala’s road network.

The situation also highlights the need for better coordination between traffic personnel, local police and puja organisers. Adequate deployment of traffic personnel at congestion-prone junctions, particularly during evening and night hours, could help improve movement at key intersections.

Strict regulation of roadside parking and unnecessary vehicle halts near shopping complexes and crowded pandals would also help reduce bottlenecks. Timely traffic diversions, clearly communicated restrictions and coordinated crowd management could prevent congestion at one location from spreading to adjoining roads.

The authorities may also need to ensure that emergency vehicles can move freely through busy stretches, particularly during peak festival hours. Clear entry and exit arrangements around major pandals, supported by visible traffic personnel, could help pedestrians and motorists navigate crowded areas more safely.

As Durga Puja approaches its main days, the pressure on Agartala’s roads is expected to remain high. The increasing number of visitors and vehicles will require more effective traffic planning, stronger enforcement and a coordinated response from the concerned departments.

The festive season is an important occasion for residents and visitors alike, but prolonged traffic jams risk overshadowing the celebrations. Improved traffic regulation and better on-road coordination will be essential to ensuring smoother movement and reducing public inconvenience throughout the remaining days of Durga Puja 2026.
