Opposition leader and CPM Politburo member Manik Sarkar expressed serious worries about the growing incidents of crime against women and asked Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha and Director General of Police Amitabh Ranjan to take immediate and effective steps to address the situation.
Addressing a press conference here at the CPM party office Sarkar said, “There were several incidents of rape in a row in the state in the last few days of October. In these incidents while some were arrested many others, mostly the prime accused belonging to the ruling party are still at large. Police is playing partisan role in this regard”, he alleged..
“We have heard that in some cases either minister’s son or relatives and or politically influential people were involved with the rape incident.”
“Police is acting at the instance of the ruling party leaders and they are inactive in arresting the key accused. In this process they-police- are earning a bad name”.
Sarkar said, though there were a spurt of crime against women at an alarming rate, the Chief Minister who also holds the home portfolio and the DGP of Tripura police were still silent on the issues. We want their statements on the matter,” Sarkar said.
He said, “Police should do their duty independently rather than acting on direction of any political parties or else people of this state will lose all their trust from the Presidential medal awardee police of Tripura.”
He also referred to the police actions against the qualified trained nurses who went to meet in deputation with the Chief Minister on October 31 as well on the TET qualified aspirants, who tried to meet the education minister on his residence.
