Unidentified gunmen opened fire at two bystanders at Natunnagar bazar area under Airport police station on Tuesday night.  The two injured in the firing incident– Sanjay Das and Haripada Das- were rushed to hospital in serious condition. Panic and tension ran high in the locality following the firing incident.

Sources said, Sanjay and Haripada were having some snacks in front of a fast-food outlet when the assailants appeared in the spot in a car. The car reaching at the spot slowed down and the assailants opened fire from pistol at the two. The fired at least four rounds, sources added.

SP Sankar Debnath and other police officials rushed to the spot and a massive man hunt was launched to nab the miscreants.

It is not yet clear who were involved in the incident and what were the antecedents of the two injured Sanjay Das and Haripada Das.  However, police suspect that the incident could have been a fall out of either smuggling related feud or it might also have been related to negotiation – extortion that are rampant in the area as massive development works were going on.

“We are looking into all the aspects but right now our main task is to nab the assailants”, said a senior police official. He sounded optimist to identify the assailants as the injured were likely to know them. Apart from that CCTV footage collected from the area would also give some clues, police believed.

In the meantime some locals and suspected individuals are also being questioned.

Police officials felt that the miscreants fired at least four rounds at the two as four cartridges were recovered from the place of occurrence.
