CPI(M) leader Jitendra Chaudhury accused the BJP-led Tripura government of suppressing democracy, citing political interference, police bias, and growing unrest. He criticised CM Manik Saha for inaction and claimed the BJP is using fear to cling to power amidst collapsing law and order.

In a scathing critique of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), CPI(M) Politburo member and Leader of the Opposition in Tripura, Jitendra Chaudhury, on Monday accused the BJP-led state government of dismantling democratic institutions and undermining constitutional rights. Speaking at a press conference, Chaudhury alleged a total collapse of law and order and claimed that democracy is being “slaughtered every day” in Tripura.

“The situation in Tripura has become undemocratic and abnormal,” Chaudhury said. “Even BJP supporters are growing disillusioned with the state of affairs. The ruling party is not only targeting opposition leaders but is also crushing democratic rights within its own party structure.”

He alleged that since the BJP assumed power in 2018, the CPI(M) has been systematically denied its constitutional rights to hold organisational meetings and political activities. Citing a recent example from Kakraban, Chaudhury said that a scheduled CPI(M) gathering on Sunday was obstructed under pressure from BJP Mandal leaders, who reportedly influenced the local police to intervene and stop the event.

“The Kakraban police failed to act impartially. This is not just a denial of permission—it is a direct attack on constitutional rights and democratic processes,” he stated.

Chaudhury didn’t stop at the BJP’s treatment of the opposition. He pointed out growing internal unrest within the BJP’s own affiliated organisations, especially its labour wing, the Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh (BMS). He highlighted an incident from Sunday in which two factions of the BMS clashed, resulting in vandalism and violence. One faction allegedly attacked the shop of Samsul Haque, a member of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha (BNS).

“There are now two faces of the BJP in the same city—one that speaks of development and labour rights and another that promotes unrest and violence. This kind of internal conflict shows the deep rot within the ruling party,” he said.

Chaudhury further took aim at Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, accusing him of remaining indifferent while law and order in the state continue to deteriorate. “The Chief Minister has failed to take any effective action despite rising public dissatisfaction. People are frustrated, yet the administration remains unmoved,” he remarked.

He alleged that the BJP is using fear as a political weapon to stay in power. “This government thrives on fear and suppression. It is not governance—it is authoritarianism in disguise,” Chaudhury added.

The Opposition leader warned that unless the current trajectory is reversed, democratic institutions in Tripura will be rendered meaningless. “We are seeing a breakdown of governance and erosion of public trust. This is not just an issue for one party or ideology—it is a threat to democracy itself,” he said.

Chaudhury called upon civil society, democratic forces, and the media to raise their voices against the growing authoritarianism and to stand up for democratic rights and freedoms. He reiterated CPI(M)’s commitment to restoring constitutional order through peaceful and legal means, despite the obstacles being created by the ruling party.
