The state government has requested the central government to set up unit of the  Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) in Agartala. The NCB unit appeared necessary as the state appeared increasingly turning into a hotbed of drugs us and narcotics smuggling by international rackets.

Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha told the assembly on Monday that besides all out campaign and actions to make the state Drugs free some other steps were also taken like that of asking for an NCB branch in Agartala and forming a Special Investigation Team (SIT). He was replying to a calling attention notice moved by Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman.

The Chief Minister said, of late 19 NDPS cases handed over to the Special Investigation Team that was formed under the Tripura Police Crime Branch.

As the drugs peddlers were found to very innovative in finding out ways to hide the narcotics in the vehicles while carrying the contrabands state government was also mulling an idea to procure a full-body scanner. The device would be used to scan the full body of the vehicles suspected to be carrying contraband items.

 The Chief Minister informed the House that presently six specially trained sniffer dogs were being used for the narcotics detention. Some more such dogs were also expected to join the police department soon..

The Chief Minister said, in the anti-drug drives, 291 cases were registered and 557 persons were arrested in 2020, another 352 cases were registered and 690 persons were arrested in 2021 and more 399 cases were registered and 542 persons were arrested till August of the current year.
