The Government today said India has been advocating for early commencement of text-based negotiations with clearly laid out timelines and milestones regarding permanent membership for India in an expanded United Nations Security Council (UNSC). In a written reply in Lok Sabha, Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh today said that India consistently highlights the need for expanding both permanent and non-permanent categories in UNSC and greater representation of the developing countries, with emphasis on the Global South.

The External Affairs Ministry has taken up the matter of permanent membership for India both bilaterally and multilaterally at various levels, including at the highest levels. The MoS said that Ministry’s engagements in this regard cover various countries, including all five permanent members of the UNSC. Mr Singh said that the government strongly believes that India has all the credentials to be a permanent member of a reformed and expanded UNSC that reflects contemporary global realities.
