PM Modi was conferred Cyprus’ highest civilian honour, the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, during his historic visit. The award celebrates India-Cyprus friendship and PM Modi’s global leadership. Bilateral talks covered trade, technology, and regional peace, marking a new chapter in diplomatic ties.
On the second day of his landmark visit to Cyprus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with the Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III, the highest civilian honour of the Republic of Cyprus. This prestigious award was presented by President Nikos Christodoulides during a bilateral meeting at the Presidential Palace in Nicosia. The gesture marked a symbolic and strategic high point in India-Cyprus diplomatic ties.
The honour is seen as a testament to PM Modi’s global stature and diplomatic outreach. In his address, Prime Minister Modi expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating that the recognition was not merely a personal achievement but a tribute to the 1.4 billion people of India. “This honour reflects the cultural harmony of our nation and the philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – the world is one family,” Modi said. He dedicated the award to the enduring friendship between India and Cyprus, their shared values, and a mutual vision for peace and cooperation.
In a post shared on platform X (formerly Twitter), PM Modi wrote, “Humbled to receive the ‘Grand Cross of the Order of Makarios III’ of Cyprus. I dedicate it to the friendship between our nations.”
This decoration is the 23rd international award received by PM Modi from a foreign country, highlighting his growing recognition as a global statesman committed to regional integrity, spiritual diplomacy, and inclusive development.
The bilateral talks between PM Modi and President Christodoulides were wide-ranging, covering cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and security. Officials from both sides described the discussions as “significant”, reflecting a mutual desire to strengthen strategic ties amid evolving global challenges.
Earlier in the day, PM Modi received a ceremonial welcome at the Presidential Palace. He also paid tribute to Archbishop Makarios III, the first President of Cyprus and a key historical figure, by laying a floral wreath at his memorial.
This visit is especially noteworthy as it marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister to Cyprus in over two decades. The two nations have enjoyed steady diplomatic relations since 1962, with Cyprus consistently supporting India on major international platforms, including the United Nations, particularly on issues such as Kashmir.
During their meeting, the two leaders discussed pathways to enhance economic cooperation, increase trade, and explore new technological collaborations. Both sides emphasized the need to maintain regional stability and peace, aligning their diplomatic priorities.
