The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is showing remarkable progress in Tripura, with over 12,800 solar plants already installed, according to Power Minister Ratan Lal Nath. He made the announcement while inaugurating a registration camp for the scheme at Ranirgaon School in Jirania subdivision.
The scheme, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 13, 2024, aims to help residential consumers generate electricity using solar panels on rooftops. Nath urged citizens to take advantage of the initiative, which not only reduces power bills but also provides an income opportunity by selling surplus electricity.
The government is offering substantial subsidies for installing solar plants. Consumers can receive up to ₹85,800 for a 3 kW solar plant, ₹66,000 for a 2 kW system, and ₹33,000 for 1 kW. Nath highlighted that a 1 kW solar plant produces about 100 units of electricity per month, significantly lowering electricity costs.
At an event in Mohanpur, Nath shared his personal experience, stating that his own electricity bill dropped from ₹6,000-7,000 per month to zero. “Now, I receive ₹7,000 per month from the Tripura State Electricity Corporation Ltd for selling excess power,” he said.
The government has set a target of 50,000 solar plant installations in the current fiscal year and is organizing awareness camps across the state. Officials have been instructed to encourage consumers with monthly bills above ₹800 to join the scheme.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, West Tripura Zilla Parishad Saho-Sabhadhipati Biswajit Shil, and other dignitaries attended the event.
