The Kalamchoura police station became the epicentre of chaos as a group of assailants attempted to assassinate Officer-in-Charge (OC) Prashanta Dey. The incident stemmed from the tragic demise of businessman Ramprasad Deb, who succumbed to injuries sustained in a car accident involving a sugar-laden vehicle.
Ramprasad Deb’s untimely demise on Sunday morning, despite medical efforts at ILS and GBP Hospital, sparked outrage among locals. The situation escalated dramatically when a group of miscreants brought Deb’s lifeless body to the main gate of the Kalamchoura Police Station, demanding swift justice.
OC Prashanta Dey, responding promptly to the demand, apprehended the accused driver responsible for the fatal accident. However, tensions flared as the group forcibly entered the police station premises, with one assailant wielding a beer bottle in an attempt to harm OC Dey.
Miraculously, OC Dey narrowly avoided injury by retreating into a bathroom, while the assailants ransacked his office, stealing cash and a gold chain containing sensitive information. Expressing bewilderment over the attack, OC Prashanta Kumar Dey questioned the motives behind the assassination attempt, emphasizing the police’s adherence to standard procedures in handling the case.
A case has been registered against the eight accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), including sections 147, 149, 427, 353, 384, and 120(b), with case number 35/2024/KLC. The accused, identified as Manik Lal Das, Ranjan Deb, Ashish Biswas, Subhash Deb, Sukhen Das, Bikas Bhattacharya, Govinda Sutradhar, and Pranab Nama, are currently on the run.
