In a sharp critique of TIPRA Motha supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, Congress MLA Sudip Roy Barman has urged the Tiprasa community to reconsider their trust in their ‘Bubagra’. Roy Barman’s comments followed Debbarman’s recent social media statement supporting the implementation of the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Addressing the media at the state Congress headquarters on Monday, Roy Barman did not mince words. “The so-called messiah has betrayed you; the one you people trusted has betrayed you. Don’t believe him, don’t support him, and don’t forgive him,” he declared. His remarks were echoed by three TIPRA Motha members who announced their decision to join the Congress, expressing their disappointment over Debbarman’s stance on the CAA.

Roy Barman announced that the Congress would initiate protests against the CAA’s implementation in Tripura. “We are sympathetic towards the religious minorities residing in Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, but the CAA is not the solution. People in remote and hilly areas of our state are already struggling with unemployment, lack of food, and poverty. How will the state bear the extra burden? Where will these people be settled?” he questioned.

He further revealed that a delegation of Pradesh Congress leaders plans to meet Chief Secretary JK Sinha to present a memorandum opposing the CAA. The BJP-led government in Tripura has already established a six-member empowered committee to process applications for citizenship under the act.
