Elon Musk calls Mukesh Ambani the “real boss of India” and alleges efforts to maintain a telecom monopoly as Starlink awaits final regulatory approvals for its satellite internet launch in India.

SpaceX and Tesla CEO Elon Musk has renewed his criticism of billionaire Mukesh Ambani over Starlink’s entry into India, sarcastically addressing him as “Dear Prime Minister Ambani” and alleging that powerful business interests are seeking to maintain a monopoly in the country’s telecommunications market.

In a post on X on Friday, Musk questioned whether Ambani would allow Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet service, to compete in India. He described Ambani as the “real boss of India” and apologised sarcastically for failing to recognise his alleged influence over the country’s business environment.

“Dear Prime Minister Ambani, Please accept my humble apologies for not realizing that you are the real boss of India,” Musk wrote.

He added, “Naturally, you would prefer to maintain your monopolistic exploitation of the great people of India, but would you nonetheless consider allowing Starlink to compete?”

Musk’s remarks have intensified the public debate surrounding Starlink’s proposed commercial launch in India and the regulatory approvals required for satellite-based internet services to operate in the country.

Musk Highlights Internet Access and Disaster Relief

Beyond his allegations against Ambani, Musk argued that Starlink could help expand internet connectivity in areas where conventional telecommunications infrastructure remains unavailable, difficult to establish or expensive to maintain.

He said that many parts of India, like regions in other countries, still lack internet access, limiting educational opportunities for children and restricting small businesses from reaching international markets.

According to Musk, Starlink could help bridge these connectivity gaps by providing satellite-based internet services to underserved communities. He argued that improved access could enable students to benefit from online education and allow small businesses to sell their products to customers across the world.

Musk also highlighted the potential role of satellite communication during natural disasters. He said Starlink had proved essential in maintaining communications and saving lives in emergencies when other communication systems had failed.

He suggested that allowing the service to operate in India could help communities maintain connectivity during disasters and support emergency response efforts.

Musk Questions Delay in Starlink’s Commercial Launch

Musk’s latest comments follow his earlier questions about why Starlink has not yet received all the approvals required to begin commercial operations in India.

The billionaire previously claimed that the company had spent five years complying with Indian laws and regulations. He also alleged that powerful business interests, which he referred to as “oligarchs,” were attempting to prevent Starlink from entering the Indian market.

In his initial remarks, Musk did not identify any specific company or individual allegedly responsible for obstructing the service’s entry.

The issue escalated after the Indian government responded to his allegations that Starlink’s satellite communication services were being blocked. The government emphasised that compliance with security requirements is mandatory for every satellite communication licensee operating in the country.

Following the government’s response, Musk asked on X whether Ambani was the “real boss of India,” bringing the billionaire industrialist into the centre of the dispute.

His latest post directly addressed Ambani and questioned whether Starlink would be permitted to compete with established telecommunications operators in India.

Starlink Awaits Further Regulatory Approvals

Starlink has secured a licence to provide satellite communication services in India. However, obtaining a licence does not automatically permit the company to launch commercial services, as additional security-related clearances and other regulatory approvals are required.

The government has rejected suggestions that Starlink is being subjected to discriminatory treatment. Officials have described such allegations as “baseless and misconceived” and maintained that satellite communication providers must satisfy the applicable regulatory and security requirements.

The dispute highlights the broader challenge of balancing competition, investment, national security and the expansion of digital connectivity as satellite internet services seek access to the Indian market.

Starlink’s proposed entry could introduce another option for consumers and businesses, particularly in remote and underserved regions where traditional broadband infrastructure is limited. However, the timing of its commercial launch will depend on the completion of the necessary approvals.

Neither Musk’s allegations nor his sarcastic remarks establish that Ambani or any particular company has influenced the government’s regulatory decisions. The government has maintained that security compliance remains essential for satellite communication operators.

As the debate continues, Starlink’s India launch remains a significant development to watch in the country’s evolving telecommunications sector, with competition, regulatory compliance and access to reliable internet at the centre of the discussion.
