Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky criticises Donald Trump’s proposed Russian diesel deal, warning that easing sanctions and allowing Moscow to export fuel could finance the Ukraine war. The agreement has raised concerns amid ongoing US-Ukraine negotiations aimed at securing a ceasefire.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has strongly criticised US President Donald Trump’s proposed agreement allowing Russia to supply diesel to the United States and international markets, warning that the arrangement could provide Moscow with additional financial resources to continue its war against Ukraine.

In a lengthy statement posted on social media platform X, Zelensky argued that allowing Russia to generate revenue through petroleum product exports would strengthen the Kremlin’s ability to sustain military operations rather than encourage an end to the conflict. He described the agreement as a move that could undermine efforts to achieve peace.

“Gifts to Putin will not bring peace or any benefit to the civilised world,” Zelensky wrote.

He further warned that Russia could use the revenue generated from diesel exports to intensify its military campaign. “Russia will ‘repay’ the diesel with further terror and perfidy. Allowing Russia to sell petroleum products is an investment in a war that must be ended, not prolonged,” he added.

The controversy followed Trump’s announcement on Friday that Russia would supply millions of tonnes of diesel to the United States and global markets under an agreement reached with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Trump said the arrangement would help reduce fuel prices significantly.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump described his conversation with Putin as highly successful and outlined the proposed scale of the supplies.

“I have just concluded a highly successful discussion with President Vladimir Putin, of Russia, wherein it was agreed that Russia will immediately supply over 300,000 Tons of Diesel Fuel to the American and Global Marketplace, another 500,000 Tons during the month of November, and 1,000,000 Tons immediately thereafter,” Trump wrote.

The US Treasury Department also issued a temporary licence easing sanctions on Russian diesel exports, facilitating the proposed arrangement.

Zelensky expressed particular concern about the timing of the announcement, as a Ukrainian negotiating delegation was in Florida for two days of discussions with US envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. The talks focused on possible arrangements to end the war, including a proposed ceasefire that would halt attacks on energy infrastructure.

The Ukrainian president questioned whether the negotiations between Kyiv and Washington were being overshadowed by the simultaneous discussions between Trump and Putin. He suggested that the Ukrainian delegation’s presence in Florida could be serving as a “smokescreen” for the agreement between the United States and Russia.

Speaking to reporters, Zelensky stressed that Ukraine’s representatives had travelled to the United States to discuss ways to stop the fighting and secure a ceasefire. Against that backdrop, the announcement of a Russian diesel supply arrangement raised concerns in Kyiv about the direction of Washington’s approach to Moscow.

Zelensky also highlighted the contrast between Ukraine’s efforts to negotiate an end to hostilities and Trump’s direct communication with Putin, whom he described as the leader of the war.

According to Zelensky, the financial benefits Russia could obtain from petroleum exports would risk strengthening its capacity to continue military operations and prolong the suffering caused by the conflict.

“Means more money for this war, more money to inflict suffering on us, without a doubt,” he said, referring to the potential revenue Moscow could receive through the arrangement.

He also criticised the decision in direct terms, saying, “It only feeds Putin and gives him the ability to fight even more.”

Describing the proposed arrangement as a “weak decision by strong partners”, Zelensky argued that measures providing Russia with additional income could conflict with international efforts to bring the war to an end.

The disagreement highlights the competing priorities surrounding the conflict, with the Trump administration presenting the proposed diesel supplies as a way to ease fuel prices, while Ukraine warns that additional Russian export revenue could undermine its security.

As diplomatic discussions continue, the proposed arrangement has become another point of tension between Kyiv and Washington over how economic decisions, sanctions and negotiations should contribute to ending Russia’s war against Ukraine.
