In a brazen display of lawlessness, a mob attacked police personnel in the Churaibari area, leaving five officers injured, including a senior official. The incident unfolded as officers attempted to detain suspected thieves following a daring theft reported on March 14.
According to police sources, officers from Churaibari police station responded to a theft at the residence of Monilal Nath in Lakshminagar Village Panchayat. Acting on intelligence, the police arrested a suspect around 1 a.m. on Sunday. However, the situation escalated when a group of 50–60 individuals armed with batons, sticks, and rods confronted the officers, demanding the release of the arrested individual.
“The miscreants launched multiple attacks on us, even besieging the police station itself,” stated a police official. In the ensuing confrontation, OC Samaresh Das and a female constable were among those injured. Additionally, the mob vandalised a police vehicle bearing registration number TR01BH/0649.
Witnessing the violence, police personnel stationed at Naka Point rallied together, prompting the assailants to flee on motorcycles. Subsequently, six individuals, identified as Arup Nath, Dipak Goswami, Ajay Debnath, Animesh Nath, Bijit Nath, and Pabitra Nath, were apprehended.
Reacting to the incident, Dharmanagar sub-divisional police officer Debashish Saha rushed to the scene to oversee operations. Additional forces from Dharmanagar, Kadamtala, and Bagbasa police, as well as personnel from TSR and BSF, were deployed to safeguard the detained suspect.
