Benchmark domestic equity indices extended losses today amid weak global cues. The Sensex tanked 1,045 points, or 1.44 per cent to close at 71,593. The Nifty dropped 371 points, or 1.64 per cent to settle at 22,232.
The broader market at the National Stock Exchange ended with deeper cuts. The Midcap 100 index lost over 2.5 per cent and the Smallcap 100 index declined more than 2.3 per cent.
In the Sensex pack, 27 of the 30 constituent companies logged losses. Among the top underperformers, ITC shed over 4.2 per cent, Indigo dropped nearly 3.4 per cent and PowerGrid fell almost 3.2 per cent. In contrast, Tech Mahindra rose over 0.4 per cent, and Axis Bank as well as Infosys added over 0.2 per cent each.
All 28 sectoral indices on the BSE succumbed to selling pressure. Among the top laggards, Power plunged 3.5 per cent, Utilities fell 3.4 per cent, and Metal dropped more than 3.3 per cent.
The overall market breadth at the BSE was negative, as shares of 3,426 companies declined, 1,003 advanced and 225 remained unchanged.
