Agartala Municipal Council in swift move demolished the illegal structures built near Ujjayanta market at in front of Tulshibati school in the heart of the city.
At the wee hours of Friday a huge contingent of AMC task force led by Commissioner Dr Sailesh Yadav and accompanied by police personnel tore down the facilities that had been constructed at government land- about eight ganda -some decades ago by some political personalities.
“The land was occupied by BJP MLA Asish Saha, Trinamool Congress leader Subal Bhowmik and some others. They had occupied the government land illegally”, said a senior official who did not want to be named.
The facilities built there were used as mostly political purpose- once as Congress splinter group office and later as Trinamool Congress office. Of late, it was used by the disgruntled BJP leaders like Asish Saha and Sudip Roy Barman.
Earlier also during Left Front government the then Chief Minister Manik Sarkar several times tried to vacate the land but at the face of stiff resistance from the Asish Saha, Subal Bhowmik and Sudip Roy Barman the government backed out and the illegal constructions remained as it was.
“The illegally occupied land measured about 8 ganda whose market value in the prime spot like that in the city heart would be around Rs 3 crore. We cannot allow such illegal occupation continue- even if they were held by political personalities. Government cannot discriminate when it comes to law enforcement”, said a senior political leader.
He said, now the government will build a modern facility on the spot. “It is not yet decided what type of government facilities would come up here, but it would be definitely a befitting one keeping in mind the ambience of the area and glory of this city”, he added.
