In a concerning revelation, the Chief Virologist of Tripura, Dr. Tapan Majumder, has raised an alarm over the increasing number of HIV-positive cases in the state.

According to Dr. Majumder, Professor of Microbiology at the Agartala Government Medical College (AGMC), at least 5 to 15 cases are found daily out of the 150 samples screened at the GBP Hospital.

Addressing the media during a routine press conference at the hospital premises, Dr. Majumder highlighted the stark rise in HIV cases over the past five years.

Previously, when the hospital conducted 25 to 30 HIV tests per month, only 7 to 8 cases turned out positive. Now, with the hospital conducting 150 sample tests daily, the number of positive cases ranges from 5 to 15.

Dr. Majumder pointed out that the highest number of positive cases is seen in individuals aged 19 to 25, primarily students attending schools and colleges. He highlighted that a considerable portion of these cases involve intravenous drug users (IVDU).

Addressing the challenges of treating HIV patients, Dr. Majumder mentioned that many diagnosed individuals tend to avoid seeking treatment. To tackle this issue, the Microbiology Department initiated a campaign aimed at identifying HIV-positive individuals by testing 95 percent of the state’s population.

The campaign’s goal is to bring 95 percent of diagnosed patients into treatment, ensuring they attain a healthy life. This approach aims to prevent further virus spread and enhance the lifespan of those under treatment.

Dr. Majumder attributed the rising HIV cases to increased drug addiction and the multiple use of syringes, emphasising the urgent need for comprehensive measures to address the growing epidemic.
