The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), Guwahati Branch Office, in collaboration with the Indian Buildings Congress (IBC), Tripura Centre, commemorated World Standards Day 2025 and hosted the BIS Stakeholders Conclave at Hotel Noah Spire, Agartala, on Thursday. The event witnessed the participation of senior government officials, academicians, industry leaders, and consumer representatives, all united under the theme “A Shared Vision for a Better World: Spotlight on SDG 17 – Partnerships for the Goals.”

The celebration aimed to emphasize the pivotal role of standards in fostering peace, prosperity, and sustainability while promoting partnerships across sectors for the collective achievement of sustainable development goals (SDGs).

The programme began with the lighting of the ceremonial lamp, followed by the soulful rendition of the BIS Manak Geet by students of Kendriya Vidyalaya, NIT Agartala, setting a tone of unity and inspiration.

Among the distinguished dignitaries present were Asit Kumar Das, Additional District Magistrate and Collector, Agartala; Amrit Lal Saha, Senior Advocate and President, Consumers’ Protection Association, Agartala; Engineer Chinmay Debnath, All India President, Indian Buildings Congress; and Shouvik Chanda, Director and Head, BIS Guwahati Branch Office.

In his welcome address, Shri Shouvik Chanda outlined the significant contributions of BIS in standardisation, hallmarking, and product certification, especially in the North Eastern Region. He reiterated that the BIS has been working relentlessly to enhance product quality and consumer safety through the effective implementation of national standards.

“Sustainable growth is possible only when industries, academia, and consumers work hand-in-hand to ensure that quality and safety are non-negotiable,” said Shri Chanda.

Engineer Chinmay Debnath of IBC underlined the Congress’s efforts in advancing quality infrastructure and sustainable building practices. He noted that adhering to well-defined standards is crucial not only for structural safety but also for environmental protection and efficient resource utilization.

In his keynote address, Shri Asit Kumar Das stressed the importance of inclusive development and the adoption of standards as tools for ensuring equity, safety, and long-term prosperity. He remarked that maintaining high-quality standards in every sector—from construction and manufacturing to education and services—will significantly contribute to India’s sustainable development journey.

The technical sessions that followed included presentations from experts such as Dr. Suman Deb of NIT Agartala, Shri Somdeep Chakraborty of Tripura Institute of Technology, and Pritam Agarwala, Scientist-C, BIS Guwahati. Their discussions revolved around BIS’s ongoing initiatives in consumer protection, quality assurance, and the development of national and international standards.

They also highlighted how standardisation supports innovation by building trust among consumers and stakeholders, ensuring that products and services meet consistent and reliable benchmarks.

The event also included cultural performances that reflected the rich heritage and traditions of Tripura, adding a vibrant touch to the technical deliberations. The programme concluded with a Vote of Thanks delivered by Mrityunjoy Das, Consultant, BIS Guwahati, who expressed gratitude to all guests, speakers, and participants for making the event a success. The proceedings were efficiently anchored by Dr. Shasanka Sekhar Borkotoky, Consultant (Standardisation Activities), BIS Guwahati.
