Bengaluru/IBNS: Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has criticised Prime Minister Narendra Modi for deceiving women by creating roadblocks in the way of the Womens Reservation Bill.

He pointed out that the BJPs hypocrisy was demonstrated by the barriers of the census, delimitation, and longevity.

Siddaramaiah said the Womens Reservation Bill will only be implemented after the first census in 2026.

He said the central government fixed an expiration date of 15 years for the Womens Reservation Bill.

Siddaramaiah also stated that the bill will expire before its implementation as it will take 15 years to overcome the obstacles of census and delimitation.

In other words, the bills implementation wont happen in 2024 or 2029. Even in 2034, it wont be in effect. The Acts intent would have been fulfilled by that point, he continued.

Making history, the Womens Reservation Bill was passed by the Parliament on Thursday evening and now awaits the signature of the President to make 33 percent reservation for women in Lok Sabha and state assemblies official.

The Bill received unanimous support from all Rajya Sabha members. There were no abstentions and no opposition. The bill cleared the Lok Sabha on Wednesday with the support of 454 MPs while only two MPs voted against it.

However, opposition parties, who all have almost supported the bill, questioned the governments intention ahead of the elections citing the reservation will be applicable only after the delimitation process which will follow the census.

Some parties including the principal opposition force Congress have demanded a reservation for the SC/ST/OBCs within the 33 percent women quota.
