In a remote region of Khowai district in Tripura, India, the tribal hill dwellers of Hazrabari and surrounding villages have been enduring severe drinking water shortages for nearly a century, compelling them to rely on irregular water deliveries via trucks and precarious mountain sources. Despite persistent appeals to authorities over the years, their plight remains largely unaddressed.
The situation in Hazrabari, situated within the Kakra Rhama ADC village and neighboring areas under the Mungiakami RD block, has reached critical levels, with locals reporting waiting times of up to two days for a single bucket of water. The absence of clean drinking water infrastructure has forced residents to resort to collecting water from mountain holes, which are often contaminated with dirt and debris, posing significant health risks.
Numerous cases of waterborne diseases have been reported among residents due to the dire consequences of water scarcity. The lack of access to clean water has led to an alarming increase in illnesses within the community.
In response to this long-standing crisis, the local population has made repeated appeals to government authorities, including road blockades and petitions, seeking urgent intervention. Their primary demand is for the installation of piped purified water systems, seen as a sustainable long-term solution to their enduring struggle.
“We have been suffering from acute water shortages for generations. Our health is deteriorating due to consuming contaminated water from makeshift sources,” shared a resident of Hazrabari.
Efforts to alleviate the water crisis have been hindered by logistical challenges and inadequate infrastructure investment in these remote areas. The lack of reliable and safe water supply exacerbates existing socio-economic challenges faced by the tribal communities.
Local leaders and activists have urged the government to prioritize this issue and allocate resources for the development of clean water infrastructure in Hazrabari and neighboring villages. They emphasize that immediate action is needed to prevent further health crises and alleviate the daily hardships faced by the affected population.
In response to inquiries, district officials acknowledged the severity of the situation and committed to working towards a comprehensive solution. Plans are underway to conduct a detailed assessment of water supply needs and explore feasible options for the installation of sustainable water infrastructure in the region.
The plight of the tribal communities in Hazrabari underscores the urgent need for coordinated efforts between government agencies, non-governmental organizations, and community stakeholders to address water scarcity and ensure access to clean and safe drinking water for all residents. The success of these initiatives will depend on timely action and sustained commitment to improving the quality of life for marginalized populations in remote areas.
