Vijay Diwas in Tripura commemorates India’s 1971 war victory as Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu recalls sacrifices, Tripura’s strategic role, and stresses peace, stability, and regional harmony with Bangladesh during solemn celebrations.

Tripura Governor Indra Sena Reddy Nallu on Tuesday highlighted the historic and enduring significance of Vijay Diwas, commemorating India’s decisive victory in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War. The day marks the surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers on December 16, 1971, recognised as the largest military surrender in world history.

Speaking after paying tributes at the Albert Ekka War Memorial on the outskirts of Agartala, the Governor said Vijay Diwas serves as a solemn reminder of India’s military valour, strategic clarity, and humanitarian commitment during one of the most defining moments in South Asian history. The commemorative ceremony was organised by the Indian Army and attended by senior military officers, government officials, veterans, and civilians.

Reflecting on the contemporary regional situation, Governor Reddy Nallu described the current developments in Bangladesh as a “temporary phase” and expressed confidence that peace and stability would soon return to the neighbouring country. He stressed that peace in the neighbourhood is vital for mutual growth and prosperity, asserting that regional harmony benefits both India and Bangladesh.

“A peaceful neighbourhood is essential for collective development and long-term stability. India has always stood for peace, cooperation, and democratic values in the region,” the Governor said, while refraining from commenting directly on ongoing geopolitical matters.

The event commemorated India’s decisive victory in the 1971 war, which led to the liberation of Bangladesh and reshaped the geopolitical landscape of South Asia. Tripura played a crucial strategic role during the conflict, serving as a major operational base for Indian forces. The state also provided shelter and logistical support to the Bangladesh Mukti Bahini and hosted a massive influx of refugees fleeing large-scale atrocities in East Pakistan.

Paying homage to the martyrs, Governor Reddy Nallu said the people of Tripura stood shoulder to shoulder with the Indian Army during the war. He noted that the unwavering support of the state’s citizens was instrumental in sustaining military operations and humanitarian efforts during the conflict.

Recalling the events leading up to the war, the Governor said widespread repression and human rights violations by the then West Pakistan regime had forced millions to flee from East Pakistan. India, under the leadership of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, extended political, diplomatic, and military support to the Mukti Bahini, culminating in a swift and decisive victory that ensured the birth of an independent Bangladesh.

The Governor also remembered the extraordinary bravery of Indian Army units that fought in the war, including the 73 Mountain Brigade. He paid special tribute to Param Vir Chakra awardee Lance Naik Albert Ekka, whose courage and sacrifice continue to inspire generations. The war memorial, named in his honour, stands as a symbol of heroism and national pride.

“On this Vijay Diwas, I offer my heartfelt respect to all the brave soldiers who laid down their lives for the nation and to those who continue to serve with dedication and courage,” Governor Reddy Nallu told the media.

The ceremony was attended by Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman, Director General of Police Anurag, Major General Sameer Sharan Kartikeya, General Officer Commanding of the 57 Mountain Division, senior Army officials, ex-servicemen, and members of civil society. The gathering reflected a strong sense of patriotism as floral tributes were offered and wreaths laid in honour of the fallen soldiers.

Defence analyst Manas Paul highlighted the strategic significance of the Indian Army’s operations during the 1971 war. He noted that the conflict involved two major military operations — Operation Cactus Lily and Operation Nut Cracker — with the 57 Mountain Division playing an active role in both campaigns, supported by the 57 Mountain Artillery Brigade.

According to Paul, the operations progressed from Agartala westwards towards Dhaka, demonstrating exceptional coordination, mobility, and firepower. The war concluded on December 16, 1971, with the unconditional surrender of 93,000 Pakistani soldiers to the joint command of Indian and allied forces.

He also recalled several war heroes whose leadership and bravery shaped the outcome of the conflict, including Lt General Jagjit Singh Aurora, Major General (Retd) Ian Cardozo, Lieutenant Arun Khetrapal, and Lance Naik Albert Ekka.
