Vice-Prez C.P. Radhakrishnan to attend Mizoram University and Tripura University convocations on March 7-8, awarding degrees, gold medals and PhDs, marking a major academic milestone for both central universities in Northeast India.

Vice-President C. P. Radhakrishnan will attend the convocations of two prominent central universities in the Northeast — Mizoram University and Tripura University — on March 7 and 8, officials confirmed on Sunday.

According to official sources, the Vice-President will address the 20th Convocation of Mizoram University on March 7 in Aizawl. The following day, March 8, he will attend and deliver the keynote address at the 14th Convocation of Tripura University.

Preparations Underway in Mizoram

In Aizawl, Khilli Ram Meena, Chief Secretary of Mizoram, chaired a high-level preparatory meeting to review arrangements for the Vice-President’s visit. Representatives from multiple government departments participated in the meeting to ensure seamless coordination and smooth execution of the event.

Key logistical, security, and protocol-related matters were discussed in detail, including reception formalities, venue readiness, and time-bound scheduling. Authorities emphasized maintaining strict adherence to protocol and ensuring that the academic ceremony reflects the stature of a central university convocation attended by the country’s second-highest constitutional authority.

Tripura University’s Long-Awaited Convocation

The 14th Convocation of Tripura University assumes special significance, as the ceremony could not be held over the past two years — 2024 and 2025 — due to administrative and scheduling constraints, a university official said.

During the upcoming convocation at the university campus in Suryamaninagar on the outskirts of Agartala, degrees, certificates, gold medals, and doctoral degrees will be conferred upon eligible students.

A total of 283 students from various departments will receive gold medals in recognition of their academic excellence. Additionally, 149 research scholars will be awarded PhD degrees, marking a major academic milestone in their scholarly journey.

The Vice-President will formally inaugurate the ceremony, underscoring the importance of higher education in the region and the role of central universities in shaping future leaders, researchers, and professionals.

Dignitaries to Address the Gathering

Several eminent dignitaries are expected to attend the Tripura University convocation. Indra Sena Reddy Nallu, Governor of Tripura, along with Chief Minister Manik Saha, and University Chancellor Ahmad Javed, will also address the gathering.

Earlier, Acting Vice-Chancellor Shaymal Das and Acting Registrar Samir Kumar Shill met the Governor at Raj Bhavan to discuss various aspects related to the convocation arrangements, including academic protocols and ceremonial procedures.

A Legacy Institution in Northeast India

Established in October 1987, Tripura University was upgraded to a Central University on July 2, 2007, under the Tripura University Act, 2006, enacted by Parliament. The institution currently has 64 affiliated colleges and plays a pivotal role in expanding access to higher education in the state.

Meanwhile, sources indicated that the Union Ministry of Education is aiming to expedite the selection process for appointing a new Vice-Chancellor at the earliest, signaling a renewed administrative focus on strengthening academic governance.
