Three BJP-ruled Northeastern Chief Ministers—Himanta Biswa Sarma, Manik Saha, and Pema Khandu—congratulated Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan on being named the NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate. The election, scheduled for September 9, follows Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation.

The announcement of Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan as the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance’s (NDA) candidate for the upcoming Vice Presidential election has drawn widespread appreciation across political circles. On Sunday, Chief Ministers of three BJP-ruled Northeastern states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, and Tripura—extended their warm congratulations and support for Radhakrishnan, lauding his long-standing contributions to Indian politics and governance.

The Vice Presidential election is scheduled to be held on September 9, 2025. This election comes following the resignation of the incumbent Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar, who stepped down on July 21, 2025, citing health concerns in his letter to President Droupadi Murmu. Dhankhar’s exit created a vacancy in one of the highest constitutional offices of the country, making the upcoming election a crucial event in India’s political calendar.

Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Praise

Assam Chief Minister and senior BJP leader from the region, Himanta Biswa Sarma, was among the first to react to the announcement. Taking to social media platform X, Sarma highlighted Radhakrishnan’s legacy as a dedicated statesman who has consistently prioritized service to the people over the years.

“The Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Thiru C.P. Radhakrishnan, is a veteran statesman who has diligently served the nation in numerous roles. Both as Governor and as Parliamentarian, serving the people was his foremost priority,” Sarma posted.

He further expressed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, BJP President J.P. Nadda, and the party’s Parliamentary Board for their “excellent decision” in nominating Radhakrishnan as the NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate. Sarma also underlined that Assam and the broader Northeastern region stood firmly behind the nomination, reflecting a united political stance in favor of the veteran leader.

Tripura CM Manik Saha’s Congratulatory Note

Tripura Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha echoed similar sentiments of admiration and optimism in his congratulatory message. Writing on X, he stated:

“Heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to the Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan Ji, on being declared the NDA’s candidate for the Vice President position. Your dedication, diligent leadership, and unwavering commitment to working in the nation’s interest will take the country to new heights.”

Dr. Saha emphasized that Radhakrishnan’s nomination reflected the NDA’s commitment to recognizing leaders with proven track records of service, integrity, and dedication. His post resonated with many BJP supporters and party workers across Tripura, who echoed their approval of the announcement.

Arunachal Pradesh CM Pema Khandu’s Warm Wishes

Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu also joined the chorus of congratulations. In his statement, Khandu emphasized the symbolic importance of Radhakrishnan’s journey in Indian politics, which has consistently been rooted in humility and service to the marginalized.

“Warm congratulations to Hon’ble Governor of Maharashtra, Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan Ji, on being nominated as the NDA’s candidate for the Vice Presidential election. His long and distinguished service as a parliamentarian and governor, guided by humility and commitment to uplift the marginalized, truly embodies the spirit of Bharat’s democracy,” Khandu wrote on X.

He further expressed confidence that Radhakrishnan’s wealth of experience would not only add dignity to the Rajya Sabha but also help steer it toward “new milestones of democratic progress.”

About C.P. Radhakrishnan

C.P. Radhakrishnan, who currently serves as the Governor of Maharashtra, has had a distinguished political career. A two-time Member of Parliament from Tamil Nadu, he is known for his articulate vision on governance, his dedication to grassroots development, and his commitment to strengthening parliamentary democracy. Over the decades, he has held multiple positions within the BJP, emerging as a respected figure across party lines.

His nomination as the NDA’s Vice Presidential candidate is seen as a recognition of his long-standing contributions, not just to the BJP but to the nation as a whole. Political observers note that his experience as a parliamentarian and as a governor makes him a natural choice for the constitutional office of Vice President, who also serves as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha.

Significance of the Election

The Vice Presidential election will be closely watched as it will determine the next presiding officer of the Rajya Sabha, the Upper House of Parliament. Given the NDA’s current strength, Radhakrishnan is widely expected to secure a comfortable victory. His nomination has been described by many analysts as a move that balances political experience with constitutional responsibility.
