Renowned actor, filmmaker, and nationalist icon Manoj Kumar passed away in the early hours of Friday at the Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. He was 87. The legendary star, known for his indelible contribution to patriotic cinema, breathed his last at around 3:30 AM following multiple health complications.

According to medical reports, Manoj Kumar succumbed to cardiogenic shock triggered by an acute myocardial infarction, commonly known as a severe heart attack. He had also been battling decompensated liver cirrhosis, which had progressively worsened in recent months. He was admitted to the hospital on February 21, 2025, after a sudden decline in his health.

Dr. Santosh Shetty, CEO and Executive Director of Kokilaben Ambani Hospital, issued an official statement confirming the actor’s demise, noting, “Veteran actor Shri Manoj Kumarji passed away peacefully… due to age-related health issues. He had been hospitalized for the past few weeks.”

Born Harikrishan Goswami on July 24, 1937, in Amritsar, Manoj Kumar rose to prominence with a string of critically acclaimed and commercially successful films in the 1960s and 70s. His on-screen dedication to national themes earned him the affectionate title ‘Bharat Kumar’, symbolizing his strong association with patriotic cinema.

His iconic roles in films such as “Shaheed” (1965), “Upkar” (1967), “Purab Aur Paschim” (1970), and “Roti Kapda Aur Makaan” (1974) struck a powerful chord with Indian audiences, especially during politically turbulent times. His directorial ventures like “Kranti” and “Clerk” further cemented his reputation as a filmmaker with a deep-rooted commitment to nationalistic storytelling.

Reacting to the news of his passing, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to X (formerly Twitter), expressing deep sorrow: “Deeply saddened by the passing of legendary actor and filmmaker Shri Manoj Kumar Ji… His works ignited a spirit of national pride and will continue to inspire generations.”

Tributes poured in from across the film industry, political leaders, and fans, who hailed him as a torchbearer of cinematic patriotism. Manoj Kumar was also briefly active in politics and had joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) after retiring from films.

A Padma Shri awardee and recipient of the Dadasaheb Phalke Award for lifetime achievement in cinema, Manoj Kumar leaves behind a powerful legacy—one built on cinematic excellence, patriotic fervor, and unwavering love for the country.

Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family shortly.
