US launches Project Freedom to secure Strait of Hormuz shipping, counter Iranian threats, and ensure safe global oil transit with defensive military deployment, highlighting rising tensions and strategic efforts to protect international commerce routes from disruption.

Tensions across one of the world’s most critical maritime corridors have intensified as the United States announced a new security initiative aimed at safeguarding international shipping. The plan, dubbed “Project Freedom,” has been introduced as a limited and defensive military effort to ensure the uninterrupted movement of commercial vessels through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz.

Speaking at a Pentagon briefing, US Secretary of War Pete Hegseth outlined the objectives of the mission, emphasizing that it is designed to protect civilian shipping from what Washington describes as repeated acts of aggression by Iran. The operation, he said, has been authorized by President Donald Trump with the primary aim of restoring confidence among global shipping operators.

Hegseth stressed that the mission is not an escalation but rather a measured response to rising threats in the region. He described “Project Freedom” as temporary in duration and strictly defensive in scope, clarifying that US forces will avoid entering Iranian territorial waters or airspace. “We’re not looking for a fight,” he said, while maintaining that safeguarding international commerce remains non-negotiable.

The Strait of Hormuz, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Arabian Sea, carries nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil supply. Any disruption in this narrow passage has immediate and far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and supply chains. Recent weeks have seen a series of incidents involving commercial vessels, including reported harassment, seizures, and targeted attacks, further heightening concerns among international stakeholders.

Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine provided operational details, stating that the mission seeks to ensure the safe transit of ships through the waterway. According to him, US forces have already established an enhanced security zone along the southern corridor of the strait. This area is being actively monitored by a combination of naval, aerial, and land-based assets to detect and neutralize potential threats in real time.

The scale of the deployment underscores the seriousness of the initiative. More than 15,000 personnel have been assigned to the operation, supported by guided-missile destroyers, helicopters, and over 100 aircraft. This layered defense system is intended to provide continuous surveillance and rapid response capabilities, effectively creating what Hegseth described as a protective shield over the shipping lanes.

Early signs suggest that the operation is already having an impact. Two US-flagged merchant vessels have successfully transited the strait under military escort, signaling a tentative restoration of safe passage. Officials indicated that more ships are expected to follow in the coming days as confidence gradually returns to the region.

Despite the deployment, US officials insist that the broader ceasefire in the region remains intact. However, they also acknowledged a pattern of continued hostilities, noting multiple incidents in which commercial ships were targeted or threatened. These actions, while falling short of triggering large-scale conflict, have been described as destabilizing and unacceptable.

Washington has framed the mission as a collective responsibility, urging allies and global partners to contribute to long-term maritime security in the region. While the United States has taken the lead for now, officials indicated that the ultimate goal is to transition the responsibility to a broader coalition.

As global trade continues to rely heavily on secure maritime routes, the success or failure of “Project Freedom” could have significant implications not only for regional stability but also for the global economy.
