Tripura’s Social Welfare and Social Education Minister, Tinku Roy, held an important meeting with Union Tourism Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in New Delhi on Thursday to discuss the preservation and promotion of Unakoti, one of the most treasured historic and archaeological sites of Tripura.

During the meeting, Minister Roy stressed the cultural significance and immense tourism potential of Unakoti, often referred to as the “Ajanta of the East” due to its massive rock-cut sculptures and stone carvings dating back to the 7th–9th century. He underlined the urgent need for both heritage conservation and tourism-driven development, which would not only preserve the state’s pride but also open up new livelihood opportunities for local communities.

Union Minister’s Response

According to Tinku Roy, Union Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat listened carefully to every issue raised and assured full cooperation from the Centre. The Minister expressed keen interest in strengthening both the heritage conservation measures and tourism infrastructure of Unakoti, ensuring that the site gains recognition not only nationally but also globally.

Roy, sharing his thoughts after the meeting, stated:

“During my special meeting in New Delhi with Union Culture and Tourism Minister Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, we had a detailed discussion about the preservation, development, and tourism potential of Tripura’s glorious historic and archaeological site—Unakoti. The Hon’ble Minister listened with great sincerity and has assured the necessary cooperation for the development of this heritage treasure.”

Unakoti: A Heritage Treasure of Tripura

Unakoti, which literally means “one less than a crore” (99,99,999), is famous for its countless rock-cut carvings of Hindu deities, with Lord Shiva being the most prominent figure. Every year, thousands of pilgrims and tourists visit the site, particularly during the famous Ashokastami Mela, making it not only a place of worship but also a cultural hub.

The state government has long been seeking central support to elevate Unakoti into a world-class heritage tourism destination, and the latest discussions signal a positive step in this direction. Preservation of ancient carvings, coupled with modern facilities, will allow visitors to experience both the spiritual depth and artistic grandeur of the site.

Looking Ahead

If the Centre’s assurances materialize into concrete action, Unakoti is likely to undergo a comprehensive transformation. Enhanced infrastructure, eco-friendly tourism measures, and improved livelihood avenues for locals will not only protect the sanctity of the site but also boost Tripura’s tourism-driven economy.
