Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawan has been detained for allegedly burning his wife alive on Tuesday night. The accused, identified as Swapan Das, a member of the 12th battalion, is said to have poured kerosene on his wife, Lakhi Das, at their residence in Gajaria, Bishalgarh subdivision.
The tragic incident unfolded after neighbors, alarmed by Lakhi’s screams, rushed to the scene and found her with severe burns covering 95% of her body. She was immediately taken to the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Hospital, but due to the severity of her injuries, she was transferred to Agartala GBP Hospital, where she tragically passed away on Wednesday.
Before her death, Lakhi Das recorded a statement accusing her husband of setting her on fire. According to sources, the couple had been married for ten years and had a daughter. Reports suggest that Swapan Das began regularly abusing his wife shortly after their daughter’s birth.
Police have since arrested Swapan Das, and an investigation into the matter is ongoing. The community has expressed outrage and shock over the horrific crime, with demands for justice growing louder.
