The Twipra Students’ Federation has called a 12 hours bandh in the State on Monday protesting against the reported assault of two ST students by Traffic personnel on January 13 last even though the state government has already ordered probe into the incident. The two students were allegedly harassed by the traffic police when they reportedly obstructed Chief Minister’s convoy on the road.
The state government in response to bandh call issued a notification asking all to maintain normal functioning of the government offices, PSUs, autonomous bodies and boards.
The government also directed the employees to perform their duties as usual. Besides, the Director General of Police has been asked to make necessary arrangements for maintaining law and order during the bandh.
Meanwhile, an FIR lodged at NCC police station stated that on January 13 last, one white colored Mahindra Scorpio vehicle bearing registration No TRO4-B-0793 driven by Angel Reang, resident of Durgachowmuhani under Kamalpur police station, had obstructed the convoy of the Tripura Chief Minister near Circuit House, when he was coming from North Gate towards Secretariat.
Noticing the matter, when Kishore Banik, a traffic police on duty, had walked over to the vehicle and enquired about the issue to the driver of the vehicle, he was reportedly misbehaved. The youth had also used unparliamentary language against the Chief Minister.
It was then that the youth and his co-passenger Abhijit Debbarma along with the vehicle was brought to Astabal Traffic Unit by the constable with the help of his colleague Jahangir Hossein from Radhanagar Traffic Picket.
In the Traffic Unit, reportedly the youth again misbehaved with the traffic constable and assaulted him physically, based on which the complaint was registered at NCC police station.
The case is being investigated by SI Shyamal Kanti Majumder of Abhoynagar TOP for. Both the youths- Angel Reang and Abhijit Debbarma were brought at NCC PS soon after the incident and a formal medical check-up was done and then they were released immediately. The medical report is still under examination and nothing abnormal has so far come to notice of the investigating officer.
In the meantime, a separate complaint was lodged by the two youths at New Capital Complex police station on the same day of incident that their vehicle bearing No. TRO4-B-0793 was stopped near Circuit House by Traffic constable Kishore Banik. They were first abused by the Traffic police and then were taken to Lake Chowmohani Traffic Unit. According to the FIR, they were also beaten up by traffic constable Kishore Banik and two others.
