US Secretary of State Marco Rubio briefed PM Modi on growing India-US cooperation in defence, trade, energy, and strategic technology while extending President Donald Trump’s invitation for a White House visit during his high-profile India tour.

High-level diplomatic engagement between India and the United States received a fresh boost on Saturday as US Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi and discussed expanding cooperation across several strategic sectors, including defence, trade, energy, and advanced technologies.

The meeting came shortly after Rubio arrived in the national capital during his four-day visit to India, a trip being viewed as highly significant amid growing geopolitical challenges and increasing cooperation within the Quad framework. During the meeting, Rubio also extended an invitation from US President Donald Trump for Prime Minister Modi to visit the White House in the near future.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office, the visiting US Secretary of State briefed the Prime Minister on the “sustained progress” in bilateral cooperation across a wide range of sectors. These included defence collaboration, strategic technologies, trade and investment, energy security, connectivity initiatives, educational exchanges, and stronger people-to-people ties.

Prime Minister Modi later described the interaction as constructive and focused on strengthening the Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership between the two countries. In a statement shared on social media platform X, Modi said India and the United States would continue working closely for global peace and prosperity.

The Prime Minister noted that discussions also covered regional and international security concerns, with particular attention to developments in West Asia. India reiterated its long-standing position supporting peaceful dialogue and diplomatic engagement to resolve conflicts.

The PMO further stated that Rubio shared the United States’ perspective on various global challenges and regional developments. During the conversation, Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to peace-building efforts and diplomatic solutions in conflict-hit regions.

The meeting reflects the steadily expanding strategic partnership between the world’s two largest democracies at a time when both nations are seeking closer coordination on economic security, supply chain resilience, maritime cooperation, and Indo-Pacific stability.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the meeting as productive and said both sides explored new ways to deepen cooperation in security, trade, and critical technologies. He emphasised that India remains a vital partner for the United States and highlighted the importance of maintaining a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

The ambassador also confirmed that Rubio formally conveyed President Trump’s invitation for Modi to visit Washington, underlining the strong personal and diplomatic ties between the leadership of both nations.

Before arriving in New Delhi, Rubio began his India visit in Kolkata, where he was welcomed at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport. Accompanied by his wife, Jeanette Rubio, the US Secretary of State visited the Mother House, the headquarters of the Missionaries of Charity founded by Mother Teresa.

Rubio’s arrival in Kolkata carried diplomatic and symbolic significance, as he became the first US Secretary of State to visit the city since Hillary Clinton travelled there in 2012. His visit also comes during a politically important phase in West Bengal following recent political developments in the state.

The US Secretary of State’s India itinerary includes visits to Agra, Jaipur, and New Delhi between May 23 and May 26. Diplomatic observers believe the visit is strategically timed as India prepares to host the upcoming Quad Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in the capital on May 26.

The Quad grouping, which includes India, the United States, Japan, and Australia, has increasingly emerged as a major strategic platform in the Indo-Pacific region. The upcoming meeting is expected to focus on maritime security, regional stability, resilient supply chains, emerging technologies, and energy cooperation.

At the invitation of External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japanese Foreign Minister Toshimitsu Motegi are also scheduled to participate in the Quad discussions alongside Rubio.

Ahead of his India visit, Rubio described India as a “great ally” and “great partner” while stressing Washington’s interest in expanding energy ties with New Delhi. He also highlighted the importance of coordination within the Quad framework amid global supply disruptions and strategic uncertainties linked to the Strait of Hormuz.

Energy security has become a major area of cooperation between India and the United States in recent years, especially as both nations seek stable supply chains and alternative energy partnerships amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs stated that Rubio’s visit would further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors of mutual interest.
