Tripura Govt will convert ten Anganwadi centres in South Tripura into English-medium institutions from June, aiming to modernize early childhood education and improve English learning opportunities for children in rural areas through coordinated efforts of the Social Welfare and School Education departments.

The Tripura Government has decided to convert ten Anganwadi centres in South Tripura district into English-medium institutions as part of a broader effort to modernize early childhood education and improve learning opportunities for children in rural areas. The initiative is being jointly implemented by the Department of Social Welfare and the School Education Department.

Officials stated that the decision has already been finalized and preparations for the transition are progressing rapidly. The selected Anganwadi centres are expected to begin operating under the English-medium system from June this year.

According to officials, teachers appointed at these centres have already completed a one-day orientation and training programme designed to help them adapt to English-medium teaching methods. Authorities confirmed that only those centres with graduate-level teachers have been included in the first phase of the programme to ensure quality instruction and smooth implementation.

The selected centres are spread across different blocks and urban areas of South Tripura district. Two centres each have been chosen from Rupaicherra block and Belonia town, while one centre each has been selected from Jolaibari, Satchand, Rishyamukh, Sabroom Nagar Panchayat, Raj Nagar, and the Bokafa ICDS project area.

Education officials believe that introducing English-medium learning at the Anganwadi level will help children build stronger language skills from an early age. The government expects the initiative to provide rural students with better academic exposure and improve their competitiveness in higher education and future professional fields.

The move is also being viewed as an important step toward aligning pre-primary education in Tripura with changing educational demands and parental expectations. Over the years, the demand for English-medium education has increased significantly across both urban and rural regions of the state.

Authorities indicated that the performance and response to the first phase will be closely monitored before expanding the programme to additional Anganwadi centres in other districts. The government hopes that the initiative will create a stronger educational foundation for young learners while improving the overall standard of early childhood education in Tripura.
