Tripura celebrated the 164th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore with vibrant events in Agartala, Kalyanpur, and Lembucherra. Cultural programs, tributes, and speeches highlighted Tagore’s timeless legacy and his special connection with Tripura’s royal family, inspiring students, scholars, and citizens across the state.
The 164th birth anniversary of Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore was celebrated across Tripura on Friday with vibrant cultural events and solemn tributes. Various organisations, including the Information and Cultural Affairs Department of Tripura, organised programmes to honour the memory and legacy of the Nobel Laureate, poet, philosopher, and cultural icon.
The central celebration, titled ‘Kabi Pranam’, was held at Rabindra Kanan in Agartala, and was inaugurated by Dipak Majumder, Mayor of Agartala Municipal Corporation and MLA from 7-Ramnagar constituency. Addressing the gathering, Majumder paid homage to Tagore and reflected on his deep and historical connection with the Manikya dynasty of Tripura.
“It is a matter of pride for us that the royal family of Tripura had a long-standing association with Kabiguru Rabindranath Tagore. Long before the world acknowledged his literary brilliance, the Manikya dynasty had already recognised his genius,” said Majumder. He highlighted that several of Tagore’s creations were penned during his visits to Tripura and praised the cultural richness of the state, which nurtured the poet’s creative spirit.
Majumder also acknowledged the continuing relevance of Tagore’s ideals. “During the era of British rule, Tagore awakened the spirit of self-rule among Indians. He was not just a literary figure but also an independent thinker and a philosopher of the highest order,” he added. He further lauded the work of literary organisations striving to uphold Tagore’s values and vision in modern society.

In addition to the Agartala event, Rabindra Jayanti was also observed in Kalyanpur, where the Kalyanpur Cultural Cell, in collaboration with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, organised a tribute in front of Tagore’s statue. Students from Kalyanpur Higher Secondary School performed music, dance, and participated in a street tableau showcasing episodes from Tagore’s life and literature. Dignitaries like Asim Deb Ray, Tapas Deb Ray, Kanika Debnath, and Sagar Debnath graced the occasion and encouraged youth participation in cultural preservation.
Meanwhile, the Central Sanskrit University, Ekalavya Campus in Lembucherra, also paid tribute to the poet through a commemorative event. The programme was presided over by Prof. Makhlesh Kumar, Director of the campus, who emphasized the timelessness of Tagore’s literary contributions and their continuing relevance in today’s world.
Other key speakers included Dr. Umesh Mishra (Head of Vyakaran Department), Dr. Swarg Kumar Mishra (Assistant Professor, Sahitya), and Dr. Suman Acharjee (Assistant Professor, English). The event fostered reflection on Tagore’s philosophies and the need to keep his universal messages alive in education and culture.
From Agartala to Lembucherra and Kalyanpur, Tripura paid a heartfelt tribute to Rabindranath Tagore, reaffirming his unshakable influence on Bengali culture, Indian philosophy, and the world’s literary heritage.
