Bikramjit Chakma, a young horticulturist from Tripura, is inspiring farmers in his community with his dedication to fruit cultivation and his efforts to preserve medicinal plants. At just 32 years old, Chakma has become an influential figure in his area, sharing his knowledge and expertise with farmers and encouraging them to take up fruit cultivation.
Chakma’s journey into horticulture began with his passion for cultivating the popular Ber fruit. He saw the potential for Tripura to become an exporter of exotic fruits due to its proximity to the international border, and he began working towards this goal. His efforts have not gone unnoticed, as he was recently mentioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in his Mann ki Baat programme on July 25, 2021. PM Modi praised Chakma for not only earning a profit from Ber cultivation but also for motivating others to do the same.
Chakma’s dedication to horticulture has earned him widespread recognition and support, including a grant of Rs. 45,000 from the government to encourage his initiative. His technical guidance has also led to about 75% of the Apple Ber crop in Tripura being cultivated under his supervision.
With the increasing demand for Ber, the state government has stepped forward to support people like Chakma by setting up special nurseries for Ber cultivation. Chakma’s influence in the community has also inspired others to take up fruit cultivation, with many farmers now seeking his guidance and expertise.
Chakma’s message to the people of Tripura is to take up fruit cultivation, as the weather and climate in the area are suitable for it, and it can lead to prosperous outcomes for everyone. His future plans include expanding his garden and growing Dragon Fruit, a testament to his continued dedication to the horticulture industry.
Chakma’s efforts towards preserving medicinal plants and promoting fruit cultivation demonstrate the potential for sustainable and profitable agriculture in Tripura. His story serves as an inspiration for others to pursue their passions and make a positive impact in their communities.
